Flyingonempty correlates to an attitude and thoughts of NOT knowing(in relationship with) a greater power than ones self. When you discover that all is not in our control it becomes necessary to try to control all(morals set aside) or seek a power that is in control and cede the future to that power.

Once a power is realised (recognized), that power must prove to be all powerful and trustworthy or the power is an illusion and soon to be discarded.
