NPMA - Value Through Professional Asset Management
As the leading membership association in the United States for asset management professionals, NPMA is committed to advancing the profession of asset management through leadership in education, standards, compliance and certifications. Asset management professionals are responsible for the effective and efficient management of movable equipment and assets for public and private corporations, government agencies, colleges and universities, federal, state and local governments, medical facilities and manufacturing companies. Effective, efficient asset management results in cost savings and cost avoidance throughout the asset lifecycle to include determination of requirements, acquisition, utilization and disposition. Enabling organizations to realize maximum value from their assets, NPMA reinforces the strategic role of asset management professionals who are poised to be strong, integral parts of all organizational processes and contribute significantly to the bottom line.

History
National Property Management Association (NPMA) was established in 1970 as the result of a merger between the Property Administration Association (PAA) and the National Industrial Property Management Association (NIPMA). On April 9, 1970 the NPMA North Texas Chapter held its charter meeting. On December 15, 1970 there were 48 active members in the chapter. NPMA was incorporated in the state of New Jersey on May 26, 1971. Formal agreement of the merger between PAA and NIPMA was signed on January 1, 1972. The New Jersey corporation was dissolved and NPMA was incorporated in the state of Florida in 1990. The NPMA National Board adopted a new set of bylaws, a constitution and Articles of Incorporation in June 1991. Today, NPMA’s membership is at nearly 4,000 (as of 2012), and the Association’s national office is located in Oldsmar, FL.

Membership
NPMA is organized into 62 chapters located within three geographic regions in the US (Central, Eastern, Western), and two international chapters (in Iraq and Qatar). The Association’s first student chapter (Cal Poly Pomona) was chartered in 2011. Also, six Special Interest Groups (SIGs) provide forums for asset management professionals (NPMA membership not required) to interact and network with others who have similar backgrounds or interests in the profession: Contract, Federal, Excess & Disposition, State & Local Government, Universities/Colleges & Other Non-Profits, and Inventory Management.

Membership Tiers: NPMA offers various tier levels of membership for individuals, groups (corporate and employees), students and retirees. Paid memberships provide a variety of benefits including discounts on the cost of participating in the NPMA Certification Program, member rates for courses/seminars/workshops, and free subscriptions to NPMA publications (bi-monthly magazine and weekly e-newsletter).

Certification The NPMA Certification Program is designed to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and designate those who demonstrate knowledge essential to the practice of asset management. By hiring NPMA certified professionals, employers can be confident they are hiring property professionals who have met certain standards of excellence. NPMA membership is not required for participation in the NPMA Certification Program. There are three progressive levels of NPMA certification - Certified Professional Property Specialist (CPPS), Certified Professional Property Administrator (CPPA) & Certified Professional Property Manager (CPPM) - each with different eligibility requirements. To assist candidates in achieving certification, NPMA offers self-study and classroom setting courses. The Association also publishes text books and manuals for the certification program.

CPPM is the highest of the three levels of certification; however, the highest level of recognition for an NPMA member is the Consulting Fellow (CF) designation, which can be achieved only after the CPPM level is earned. Consulting Fellows are expected to have made significant and continuous contributions to the field of asset management. This recognition is designed to provide the NPMA with a core group of technical experts who will mentor the next generation of asset management professionals, educate NPMA members, perpetuate literature, and provide leadership.

Activities
NPMA offers a broad range of educational programs including seminars, publications and forums for every stage of the asset management professional’s career. NPMA sponsors two region conferences and one national conference annually. The focus of these conferences is to provide education, networking, and the latest solutions for managing, controlling and protecting assets.

Awards
In recognition of contributions to the asset management profession and the Association, NPMA accepts nominations and petitions annually for Best Practices, Chapter of the Year, Property Person of the Year, Federal Property Manager of the Year, Outstanding Members, and Lifetime Achievement. In addition, members are recognized for years of service (25+) and literary contributions.

NPMA is governed by a 13-member volunteer board that manages the Association’s business and affairs. Executive board officers serve two-year terms and are elected by a majority vote of delegates who represent the collective direction of their chapters.
