Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Mclachlan-live.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mclachlan-live.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:11, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, could you clarify your position on adding YouTube links for music videos to the articles? I was under the impression that linking to YouTube violates Wikipedia policy, and I would like to know if I am wrong on this point. MelicansMatkin (talk) 05:19, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Per Wikipedia:EL:
Linking to YouTube, Google Video, and similar sites
There is no blanket ban on linking to these sites as long as the links abide by the guidelines on this page (which would be infrequent). See also Wikipedia:Copyrights for the prohibition on linking to pages that violate intellectual property rights.
Best, feydey (talk) 05:25, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks very much for that clarification, :) MelicansMatkin (talk) 05:49, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
How do you know the Youtube videos you link to do not violate copyright? CloudNine (talk) 11:36, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
All the Youtube links that I added are from one user:
Universal Music Group (UMG) Music Video Channel.
Universal Music Group consists of record labels Decca Music Group, Deutsche Grammophon, Interscope Geffen A&M Records, Geffen Records, Island Def Jam Music Group, Lost Highway Records, MCA Nashville, Mercury Nashville, Mercury Records, Philips, Polydor Records, Universal Music Latino, Universal Motown Records Group, Universal South Records and Verve Music Group as well as a multitude of record labels owned or distributed by its record company subsidiaries around the world.
I assume them them to be the copyright holders who are releasing the music videos on YouTube. feydey (talk) 17:07, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Also I'm pretty sure that Youtube would have not allowed the user to upload 4505 videos if it were not a legitimate copyright owner. :) Best, feydey (talk) 17:11, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]

Hello. Yeah, I got the picture off of Yahoo! Movies and I was just trying to put the picure up on his article. However, I was unaware of the copyright licenses that needed to be in place. It is not picture and I was just trying to contribute without actually knowing what I was doing. I tried to delete from my account but couldn't find a way to do it. I realize the importance of the licensing however I was not aware of the proper procedures. I really don't care about adding the image to his profile I just thought I could do somethint to enhacne the website. If it must be deleted, I totally understand, with either you, someone, or myself doing it. I hope this did not cause any inconveniences. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

"References" vs. "Further reading"

[edit]

Please do not add new sources into an article under the title References or Bibliography. Take, this article for example. This makes readers think that the articles source was actually Nathaniel's Nutmeg - which is of course, not the full picture. Perhaps some of the info in the article could be found in the book, but that doesn't mean that all the info is there. It would be better to use a "Further reading" section if you want to add texts after the fact. Even better, would be to put inline cites to Nathaniels Nutmeg to specific parts of the article text. Any questions, please let me know. thanks --Merbabu (talk) 14:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment. feydey (talk) 15:18, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
You've added new sources under the headings "references" and "bibliography". This would suggest they were used to write the article, but this is not the case. I would be better to put them as inline citations for the exact piece of info. Ie, what part of East Timor article was the "Dunn" reference used for? --Merbabu (talk) 15:38, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Could you please be more specific and explain the relevance of WP:CITE to my specific concerns above? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Merbabu (talkcontribs)
But, once again, the sources you added for East Timor were not "used as a references" as mentioned in the section of WP:CITE that you pasted. That's my whole point. But, if there is a specific point in the article for which the books can used as a cite with a page number, then by all means do so. --Merbabu (talk) 16:50, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Then put them under if "Further Reading" if you must, which is a dubious practise. They were not used to create the article, and hence are not the biography.--Merbabu (talk) 17:13, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Novels WikiProject Newsletter

[edit]

Hi, Feydey, I saw that you're on the work group for putting together the Novels WikiProject Newsletter. Since Kevin has taken a hiatus and his bot is usually the one to send the newsletter out, do we have another course of action? John Carter (talk · contribs) had mentioned BetacommandBot sending out some, but apparently it missed quite a few members, him and I included. I think he is sending it out to those who were missed right now. Would it be a good idea to advertise (perhaps in this month's newsletter) for a replacement bot? Orphaned non-free media (Image:Volvo-logo-vsm.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Volvo-logo-vsm.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. The changes were based on agreement by only two people, and by a discussion that took place outside the Beer Project. There may be some merit in the changes, and to prevent future conflict it is important that there is some discussion of the matter. Cricket

Alyssa Healy [1] has played cricket for New South Wales and that's accepted as being enough to make her notable. Thank you for uploading Image:Miriya holding Dana.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. feydey (talk) 08:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I thought I had already met these conditions. I was simply uploading a new version of a file that was already in place. In any case, I've added more specific information to the fair use rational and the copyright holder's title. (Hyperionsteel (talk) 21:44, 30 July 2008 (UTC))

I can't seem to find the copyright tag for video files - only for image files. This isn't technically a video but rather an animated gif file. However, I don't want to nitpick as I can understand why this would be considered a video file.

Could you please point out what copyright tage I should use? I was under the impression that animated gif files qualified as Images? (Hyperionsteel (talk) 22:07, 31 July 2008 (UTC))

Sarah Palin wheel war case request for evidence

[edit]

Copying this to all admins who applied or extended protection on the Sarah Palin article.

To date there's been plenty of evidence pointing to discussions and otherwise offering commentary on the admin actions taken, but there's been little covering the circumstances prior to admin actions, namely the edits that the admins concerned based protection on. Newyorkbrad has put a question to the parties on this basis, but it seems to be only non-parties that have noticed that so far, so I'm putting this question to those involved directly.

Rootology has made a start here, and GRBerry has started drafting in his userspace. Ye might like to assist them in their efforts, or add a section of your own. This evidence will be vital in assisting the Committee's understanding of not only what happened and when, but why it happened. --bainer (talk) 14:01, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Daggatun, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Jewish_Encyclopedia/Daggatun. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 17:29, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Deleted images

[edit]

Hi there,

I noticed some images I shared were deleted some time ago, by possibly you. Note, these images were 15-year old images from Mercedes Benz advertising literature, which I thought was considered "fair use?" If that is so, I would like to re-submit them, as they were excellent images of a special car built 15 years ago. Thank you, Tom

Re: WP:SPEEDY IMAGE

[edit]

Hi! Apologies for the error - I hadn't used a Speedy tag on images before, and I tried to pick the right one. Must have misread something quite badly. I'll look over it again. Thanks :) \ / () 11:17, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

The Story of Egmo Image

[edit]

I own the 'Story of Egmo' image which I uploaded earlier today, and the 'egmo.co.uk' website (as stated in the image summary), both of which were created entirely by me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dubber99 (talkcontribs) 14:41, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Egmo Image

[edit]

Yo. Coke and Mickey eh? I'm humbled. I've emailed Wikimedia foundation to confirm ownership of the image as requested in the bumf. I was under the impression that was all that was needed - Am I missing something here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dubber99 (talkcontribs) 15:26, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Image deletion

[edit]

I saw where my first uploaded image to Wikipedia had been deleted[2]. The reason that was give was blatant copyright violation. Does Dramatica own copy right on the images or are they freely licensed? I'm terribly ignorant about this area of the Wiki.Any guidance would be helpful.Die4Dixie (talk) 18:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing the problem with the incorrect copyright tag on Image:TLCigabb.jpg. I changed the copyright tag to the correct one, {{Non-free album cover}}. In general, when you see that something has been tagged incorrectly, it is best to try to add an appropriate tag if one can be found. -- Eastmain (talk) 00:59, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Why are you deleting this band?

[edit]

Help?

What do you need for notability? I can read about Squirrel Nut Caramels -- but not one of the leading bands in North Carolina? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pbfloyd99 (talkcontribs)

Hi, how am I supposed to have a discussion about the article title with someone who tells me that I'm not qualified to edit the article because I'm from the wrong country, and that I'm not familiar with the show, and that my views should be ignored because I have such an ego that I can walk into whatever article I want and edit. (see my talk page). Stop and think for a moment about the frame of mind a person has to be in in order to claim that. And just so we're crystal-clear about the sort of editor we're dealing with, they felt it was necessary to edit the Sarah Palin article, the day before the 2008 Presidential Election, to explain how he wanted to have anal sex with her. Yeah. Great.

I explained my reasons for why the article name should be the way it is (put shortly: "their web site clearly says the show's name is x; this establishes WP:V"), their response is a two word "uh what?", reverts again, and refuses to discuss further. How are you supposed to come to a consensus with someone when you're up against that? Warren -talk- 10:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

That is the biggest nonsense I heard all week long. Not only is this editor uncivil, but irrational as well. And right now, he’s currently on the hot seat from other editors for his brash and unethical way of deal with them and their edits and shown in this complaint filed right here... Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts#User:Warren. As for my own personal dealings with this editor, I don’t know where he gets this off-the-wall idea that Meet the Press, as well as Fox News Sunday do not include the names of David Gregory and Chris Wallace respectively when it is CLEARLY shown on the title cards and logos of both of these respective articles, on the networks of NBC and FOX, and their respective websites. What’s next? Is he’s going to remove George Stephanopoulos and Bob Schieffer’s name from their respective Sunday Talk Shows. Maybe he might take his irrational way of thinking to the late night talk shows and remove Jay Leno, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien’s names, and have their respective shows be called “The Tonight Show”, “The Late Show”, and “Late Night” only. And who knows if he’s going to stop there. This probably does sound ridiculous. But witnessing first hand what this editor, Warren, has done last week, I would not rule that unthinkable possibility out.
As for the Sarah Palin edit, I challenge you to find another unproductive, controversial edit on my record. Be my guest, but I’ll tell you this much. You’ll find nothing, because unlike Warren I personally DO NOT use profanity and vulgar slang in my edits. Now clearly there is absolutely not way for me to prove that the Sarah Palin edit was done by another person using my wikipedia screen name. In a time when identity theft is on the rise in every aspect of life, anything is possible. Therefore, I’m not even going to try to prove my innocence there because editors like Warren are going to believe what they want to believe, and there’s absolute nothing that other editors can do to change his stubborn state of mind. I don’t go on wikipedia to start controversy, looking for trouble, and create bad blood with other editors. But when I do encounter someone like Warren who does like to do this, mark my word I will stand my ground against these uncivil, unreasonable and controversial editors. Please discuss the naming issue in Talk:Meet the Press. feydey (talk) 15:35, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Feyday, the above editor deleted my prior request for a comment from your talk page. Warren -talk- 20:51, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
I (feydey) know, if it is important to You (Warren) - restore it. And please people, discuss the issue in Talk:Meet the Press not on my talk page and stop insulting each other. feydey (talk) 21:02, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Have done, thanks for taking the time to resolve this. Warren -talk- 21:24, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Edit warring in the intro

[edit]

Since a revert war is going on regarding the show's name in the intro I have protected the article for now. Please discuss the issue and try to reach a consensus regarding the issue to get the article unprotected. Best, feydey (talk) 17:22, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

As there are no comments I assume the article is good "at current condition" and no reverts concerning the title will commence. I will unprotect in 24h. Remember, it is always a good practice to source all edits. Best, feydey (talk) 15:22, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
While I do respect your decision to unprotect the Meet the Press article, I have a bad feeling it may not be the best idea. Knowing first hand how my opposition operates, he will continue with his same irrational edits before the lock occurred. Already this past week, Warren and I were engaged in another unwanted edit war on the Fox News Sunday article over the exact same thing. He wants to remove the host, Chris Wallace’s name from the title. When it is clearly shown on the [card] and logo that his name is on it. This was the same deal with Meet the Press and how he wanted to remove David Gregory’s name despite the fact that he is now the new permanent host, and that his name is in fact on that [card]. I’m not saying you should keep the article locked. All I’m saying is, we must keep an eye on this one, and keep our fingers crossed that this editor, Warren, will not go back to his obnoxious ways. S3884h (talk) 15:49, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
If you have a dispute with me, that's fine and all, but Feyday has requested that the insults stop. Let's focus on doing things according to Wikipedia's policies instead. Warren -talk- 12:25, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
