Musical Career
[edit]Long before he found himself collaborating with superstars such as Playboi Carti, 6ix9ine receiving the endorsement of Hypebeast, Highsnobiety, and HotNewHipHop, and touring alongside Lil Pump and Lil Skies, Jack Bruno attended a gig that altered his course forever. At nine-years-old, the Plano, Texas native witnessed the Pop Disaster Tour headlined by Blink-182 and Green Day with his mom.
The evening ultimately set his entire career in motion. “I looked up at the stage and thought, ‘I want to do that’,” he recalls. “I loved the energy. I knew I had to play live. I knew I had to make music. I knew I had to be an artist", said Jack Bruno in a recent interview.
So, that’s exactly what he did. At 16-years-old, he tore up stages and destroyed eardrums with a hardcore-infused punk band. As the band’s 2009 debut made waves, major labels offered recording contracts—only to be rebuffed by Bruno who staunchly clung to his independent ideals and identity even at this young age. In the aftermath of 2011’s sophomore album, the group toured alongside Rise Against, Pennywise and more. Desiring “to do something that had less boundaries creatively,” he founded an alternative band in 2013, going on to receive fervent critical acclaim.
However, addiction took hold of Bruno as his bandmates quit following an intervention.
As he got his life together, the singer, rapper, multi-instrumentalist, and producer architected a personal style that spoke to his dynamic inspirations. Diving into beat-craft, he worked on producing tracks augmented by his guitar and piano playing with another dimension. At the same time, he developed his voice like never before. These ingredients comprised a punked-up and gothed-out hip-hop style defiant of rules, categorization, and boundaries.
Breaking the mold, he boldly brought a decade-plus of experience in bands to rap music.
“I’m approaching hip-hop from a different background of being in punk rock and getting tested by failure so many times,” he stated in an interview. “I’m taking all of this experience and infusing it into this. I had to go by Jack Bruno, because that’s what the music is. There’s no hiding behind a band name. It’s me. I’m going straight for it.”
Around the same time, he met producer DJ Camper (Drake, Big Sean) through a mutual friend. Camper then introduced him to Hit-Boy (Eminem, JAY-Z). Sharpening his sound, Bruno’s 2017 debut single, “2 Goth Kids” (feat. Famous Dex), ignited a buzz with 620,000 Spotify streams. Meanwhile, his 2018 banger “Ciggy Said Light” (feat. Playboi Carti) exploded. Not only did it amass over 2 Million total streams, but it also attracted acclaim from Billboard, Complex, and more. He maintained a prolific output upheld by “Misfit” (feat. Famous Dex), the Don Cannon-produced “Next Year,” and “100 Thots” and the SoundCloud exclusive release 0001 mixtape to name a few.
The 2019 single “ILoveJustinBieber” illuminates his evolution. Over an airy and ominous beat, he slips from braggadocious flows into a sing-song hook, “They love me like Bieber, got stripes like Adidas, yeah, it’s really nice to meet you.” As he explains, the track, “shows a different side of me having fun.” It also paves the way for the arrival of his proper debut project, 0002.
In the end, Bruno’s journey thus far sets the stage for his biggest and boldest chapter yet.
“I hope people take away two things,” he leaves off in the interview. “There’s a jolt of ‘let’s go fu*k sh*t up’ energy they will feel. Then, there’s also a really sincere and hearfelt tone. It’s the feeling like you’ve met a really cute girl or guy and have a crush on them. In the same way, I want them to feel connected to something bigger. If I can convey any of those feelings, it’s a victory.”
