Dr. Evelyn O'Brien (Psychiatrist)
Early life and family.
An important person in Irish asylum medicine who had interest in taking care of individuals who had suffered from epilepsy and the intersection among neurology and psychiatry is named as Dr Eveleen O’Brien. (O'Collaghan AK & Kelly BD, 2019) The full name of this leading figure is Eveleen Josephine O’Brien and she was born in the country named Tubbercurry, Sligo in the year of 1901. She was the fourth child of her parents raised in an average class of a Catholic family. Dr Eveleen O’Brien’s mother, Mary Josephine Ahearne got married to a person named Thomas O’Brien who was included in the Royal Irish Constabulary. As Thomas O’Brien was a member of Royal Irish Constabulary so the family had to travel various times due to the nature of the work he was doing (O’Callaghan & Kelly, 2019). The early education of O’Brien was conducted in Ursuline Convent which is situated in Thurles. Their she learned about the subject Mathematics and Latin. These both of the subjects were essential to be studied in order to qualify for matriculation. However, both of these subjects were taught to the girls once in a blue moon in the twentieth century. By the time O’Brien and her eldest brother William got admission in University College Dublin (UCD), the family was residing in Dublin as well. Later both of the siblings got graduated from the university holding a degree of medicine. When O’Brien got graduated, she was 23 at that time. After getting a reputable degree, O’Brien began working as an assistant in Scotland’s general practices. She worked for 2 years i.e. 1924 and1926. Whilst she was working, she was also studying niche of public health from UCD and received a diploma in 1925. Later in the year of 1928, O’Brien came to United Kingdom to start working on specialist training. Before that, she had worked for a shorter duration at Children’s Hospital in Dublin which is located at the Temple Street. O’Brien took three months to get qualify in the neurology training form the Neurological Hospital. This was a famous neurological hospital which was situated in Queens Square, London. Along with this training, O’Brien also got trained in psychiatry from the Maudsley Hospital sited in London. In 1929, O’Brien also received a certified diploma in the niche of Psychological Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians (Kelly, 2015).
