Farzaneh and Bahareh Safarani (The Safarani sisters) were born (1990) and raised in Tehran, Iran, and are collaborative twin artists. They have been painting together since they were thirteen years old, and continue to work inseparably. The sisters studied painting, performance, video, installation, at the University of Tehran. They received their Master's degrees in Studio Arts from the College of Art, Media & Design at Northeastern University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. They have shown their work extensively in the United States and internationally in solo and group shows. The Safarani Sisters are mostly known for their innovative combination of video and painting together, that no one has come close to the poetry and psychological depth of Safarani sisters's work. The two create stunning and dramatic compositions of one another within dark interiors. The paintings by themselves are uniquely beautiful. However, in their work, the artists have project videos of figures walking through the interiors they depicted on canvas. The effect is visually stimulating and adds even more depth to the narratives in paint. The subject matter seems to allude to a conversation about identity. Not only are the identical twins raising questions about personal individuality, but they also call attention to their identities as Iranian women – often depicting a black cloth or burka, slightly covering their bodies.
