History
[edit]Farnsworth Group has been providing consulting services for more than 100 years. The Company’s work began in the late 1800’s when a local land surveyor traveled from community to community providing survey services for municipalities. Ever since then, the employees operated under the premise that the client is the first priority.[3]
Sustainable Design
[edit]Farnsworth Group has designed sustainable buildings that have earned all levels of LEED certification, provided engineering services on some of the largest wind farms in the country, developed green master plans for entire communities and revitalized blighted neighborhoods through new urbanism techniques. Farnsworth Group has more than 60 LEED Accredited Professionals covering each of the primary disciplines. In addition, they helped write the book on sustainable design, with members of our team involved in crafting commissioning and LEED guidelines for the US Green Building Council.[4]
Notable Projects
[edit]U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services Building
[edit]This 140,000 SF steel and precast concrete building was designed and constructed on a fast track basis[5] . Fansworth Group was appointed to prove architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing engineering, energy modeling and commissioning. The USGBC has recognized this facility as a LEED Silver facility. Fansworth Group partnered with Kiewit Corporation of Omaha, NE for this project. This project had received a number of awards[6] :
- 2006 Sustainable Design Award for Excellence in Architecture, Central Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
- 2006 General Services Administration, Reclaim to Fame Award
- 2006 General Services Administration, Environmental Award, Build-to-suit honorable mention
- 2006 General Services Administration, Achievement Award Finalist for Real Property Innovation, Public Buildings Service
University of Colorado - Colorado Springs Rec Center
[edit]This 54,000 SF facility featured a two court gymnasium, a fitness center with cardiovascular machines, weight machines and free weights. The building also has an indoor pool, a hot tub, an aerobics center, a dance room, a café, a multi-purpose room and an office for the Campus Recreation Department. Farnsworth provided LEED Navigation, LEED Commissioning and energy modeling services. The USGBC awarded this project with a LEED-NC Gold rating.[7]
Children's Discovery Museum
[edit]Farnsworth Group provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design, commissioning and LEED consulting services for this new 34,000 SF children's museum. The project included design for exhibit spaces, office spaces, storage areas for permanent and traveling exhibits, and a 3-story atrium. The atrium has a smoke control system, and the entire building is humidity controlled. The USGBC has recognized this facility as a LEED Silver facility.[8]
Twin Grove's Wind Farm
[edit]Farnsworth Group’s survey and transportation sections first began working with Horizon Wind Energy on the 400 MW Twin Groves Wind Farm in McLean County in 2005. Currently, 240 wind turbines have been constructed, and all are producing electricity.Phase I included the widening and strengthening of 26 miles of Township roadway. Phase II included 28 miles of Township roadway improvements. Phases III, IV, and V are in the study phase and design could begin within the next year. This wind farm covers an area of approximately 67 square miles, with wind turbines located on roughly 180 different land parcels across eastern McLean County. A site control network was established using GPS equipment. The network was tied to the McLean County GIS control as well as the new HARN network established within the state.Section/quarter section corners and measurements to locate or re-establish these corners were gathered with the GPS equipment and tied to the control network. When Horizon Wind Energy purchased the site for the newly created Twin Groves Wind Farm, it also purchased an existing farmhouse, built in 1906. Rather than tear down this structure, Horizon asked Farnsworth Group to provide design services for the renovations to convert what once was a home into an office for both Horizon staff and a turbine supplier.[9]
