Thalassotherii (from Greek Thalassos, "sea", and Therii, "mammal beast") is a superfamily of baleen whales.[1] Based on several morphological characters, Bisconti et al. 2013 included Balaenopteridae (rorquals), Eschrichtiidae (gray whales), Cetotheriidae, and basal 'cetothere' mysticetes and excluded Balaenoidea, Eomysticetoidea, and the toothed mysticetes[2] (Aetiocetidae, Aetiocetoidea, Cetotherioidea, Eomysticetidae, Llanocetidae, Mammalodontidae, Mauicetus, Physalidae, Pterobalaenidae).

Definition
Thalassotherii includes Cetotheriidae s.l., Cetotheriidae s.s., Eschrichtiidae and Balaenopteridae. In phylogenetic terms (Sereno 1998, 1999), Thalassotherii is defined as USNM 187416, Balaenoptera, their last common ancestor and all the descendants of this ancestor. Phylogenetically, the most basal named taxon of Thalassotherii is Joumocetus shimizui Kimura and Hasegawa, 2010. The establishment of Thalassotherii in the taxonomy of mysticetes makes the term Cetotheriidae s.l. obsolete because the latter and Cetotheriidae s.s. do not form a monophyletic group. Cetotheriidae s.l. is to be changed into basal thalassotherians or thalassotherian stem group or Thalassotherii sedis mutabilis ("of changeable seating").[1]
we found support for a clade formed by broad-nosed ‘cetotheres’ only, including Pelocetus calvertensis, ‘Aglaocetus’ patulus and Uranocetus gramensis.
Eschrichtiidae is the sister group of Balaenopteridae and Cetotheriidae is the sister group of Eschrichtiidae;
Cetotheriidae (both s.s. and s.l.) is not sister group of Caperea + Balaenopteroidea
we did not find support for the superfamily Cetotherioidea Steeman (2007) (including Cetotheriidae, Eschrichtiidae, Cetotherium megalophysum, Mixocetus and ‘Mesocetus’ argillarius).
The new clade is diagnosed by characters observed in the ear bones, the supraoccipital and the dentary.
