The newly born Vikashananda was discovered lying on a temple premise in Kathmandu, Nepal, on June 16 1961. He grew up in Kathmandu as an adopted son in a lower-middle class family. A mischievous child, he had a troubled upbringing and he seldom went to school. In 1979, aged 18, he travelled to the then USSR in a team of meticulous Nepali teens as his painting won the national award. Later, as he practiced yoga and meditation, he happened to experience “satori”, also called a brief enlightenment, on January 27, 1983. This event inspired him to leave home and travel to India in search of further spiritual achievements. He spent six years in India, studying Buddhism in Sampurnananda Sanskrit University, being a Buddhist Monk, following various spiritual and religious masters, and reading widely.
Career[edit]
Upon returning to Nepal from India in 1990, Vikashananda founded Ananda Yoga Center and started his career as a Yoga instructor. In 1991, his yoga programs started to broadcast from the Nepal Television, the only national television in Nepal. In 1992, Vikashananda is said to have attained “self-realization” under the instruction of Swami Sarbdananda in Benares. Vikashananda represented Nepal in World Yoga Conference in Brazil in 1995. He introduced in Nepal the trainings of Mind Technology in which he trained thousands of youths in “how to be successful in life”, and training of Reiki .
