Ewartia Meredithae is plant species under the family ASTERACEAE. This species was named in honour of Mrs Louis Anne Meredith (1812-1895). Commonly known as Rusty cushion herb.
Habit[edit]
Ewartia Meredithae is a perennial herb forming cushion-like mates which are sometimes 30-40 cm in diameter. Many erect stems arise from the branching basal ones reaching the uniform height of 2-6 cm and becoming compacted into a mat by means of spreading adventitious roots. The leaves about 5mm long, spathulate, more or less parallel with stem, loosely imbricate, erect bases hidden by the blades, which are suberect to recurved and yellowish to rusty-brown in colour due to appressed hairs. The flower-heads are conspicuous because of the inner involucral bracts which are rigid, white-tipped, and spreading, surrounding but not obscuring the tubular florets. All flower heads are unstalked, terminal and level with leaves, or erect on short stalks. Head a small white paper daisy with brown outside bracts, conspicuous narrow white spreading bracts and small whitish disc florets in the protruding centre. Flowers have different positions of the inflorescence.some flowers are almost hidden by the uppermost leaves and other are borne on peduncles 1-3 cm long. Fruits with pappus. Flowering usually occur in the month of December.
Distribution and Habitat[edit]
Ewartia Meredithae frequent in wet exposed places on Tasmania Mountains. This species is very local and endemic species of Tasmania.
