Martin-Smith School of Music, Inc., founded in Harlem in 1914 by David Irwin Martin, Sr. (1899–1923), and Helen Elise Smith, who later married composer Robert Nathaniel Dett. It was located at 139 West 136th Street, Manhattan, New York. Martin, with his wife, Gertrude Henrietta Martin (née Mars; born 1883), also founded the National Association of Negro Musicians around 1916.
