UNT Charter

The Charter of the Texas Normal College and Teachers' Training Institute was filed in June 1891 with the Texas State Department. Capital was $10,000. The directors were Robert Henry Chilton, MD (1844–1901), and his brother, Joshua Crittenden Chilton (1852–1896), its founding president, and Henry Frederick Schweer (1850–1931) of Denton. In 1880, Robert Chilton, had become the first eye, ear, nose, and throat physician in Dallas. Jesse A. Sanders was secretary.

Temporary quarters

While waiting a year before the first facility was built on the original purchased 160 acres (plus 10 acres donated by the city), classes were held in the Dawson Building.
