Music Business Association (Music Biz) is the principal trade association representing retailers and distributors of sound recordings in the United States. Its members are engaged in the distribution and retail sale of digital music in pre-recorded format and through digital distribution.
History
[edit]The National Association of Recording Merchandisers, Inc. (NARM) (original name) was founded in 1958 — the same year as the introduction of the first stereo LP. The word "Recording" was sometimes replaced with "Record" or "Rack" by industry press.

The the membership was composed of 13 companies that were operating as phonograph record rack jobbers that sold via supermarkets and chains. The first meeting of Directors took place in September 1958 in Chicago. The organization henceforth held annual meetings, which, beginning in 1959, became conventions. Also, in 1959, NARM began the annual tradition of presenting awards for best-selling albums and singles. These award became known as the NARM Awards.

National Association Of Recording Merchandisers is an entity incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. It's business address is in Marlton, New Jersey. The Association was formed on September 5, 1958, as the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, filed as No. 2728248 with the District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.

In 1960, the IRS recognized the Association as a non-profit organization exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(C)(6) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Membership eligibility
[edit]As the primary mission of NARM is to serve its retailer members, only retailers and the wholesalers who service them are eligible to be General (i.e., voting) members of NARM. Music labels, video and video game suppliers, and their respective distribution subsidiaries, are eligible to be Associate (i.e., non-voting) members of NARM.[1]
