- SHHHH! "Music for Quiet Listening," a record album designed to have a soothing effect on the high-strung public, has been issued by Mercury Records. Performed by the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra under the direction of Howard Hanson, the record includes nine of the compositions which have won the Edward B. Benjamin Award for Restful Music, presented to an Eastman School student each year at the Festival of American Music. The awards were established in 1953 by Edward Bernard Benjamin, Sr. (1897–1979), and his wife, Blanche S Sternberger (née Blanche S Sternberger; 1901–1995). Sometimes multiple awards were given annually until 1971. Edward was a New Orleans industrialist. Included are works by:

French Company, headquartered in Rochester, and its parent, in Great Britain (Reckitt & Colman Ltd. from 1926 to 2000; then, by merger in 2000, becoming Reckitt Benckiser Group plc), established an exchange professorship between the University of Rochester and University of Hull in 1953 and later expanded to exchanges between Rochester and colleges at Oxford University (May & Klein; 1977). Today, the program continues between professors at Oxford and the University of Rochester.
