Cavaliere

[edit]

Cavaliere" is the first degree of an order of knighthood, of which there were a few in 1800 Italy.

Before the unification of Italy in 1861 (see Timeline), every Italian State had its own order of knighthood, by way of which the sovereign (or the "Doge" of the Republic, for Genoa and Venice) rewarded those citizens who distinguished themselves or rendered valuable services to the State.

For a complete list of the old Italian orders, see Orders, decorations, and medals of Italy.
