Rhodes Scholar
[edit]- Rhodes Scholar. In 1922, after graduating from the University of Wyoming and while on the faculty of Laramie High School, Parker was selected December 2, 1922, as a Rhodes Scholar, slated to attend one of the colleges at the University of Oxford in the Fall 1923. He was the third from Sheridan to be selected.[4] The two others were:
- 1914–1917: Seymour Sereno Sharp (1893–1953) (Wyoming class of 1915), Exeter College
- 1917–1920: Horace North Wilcox (1892–1966) (Wyoming class of 1917), St. John's College[5]
Four others from Wyoming, as of 1917, were Rhodes Scholars, $1,500 yearly (equivalent to $50,867 in 2023):
- 1904–1907: Harold Guy Merriam (1883–1980) (Wyoming class of 1905), Lincoln College
- 1910–1913: Edward Noel Roberts (1888–1973) (Wyoming class of 1910), Exeter College, son of Wyoming missionary, Rev. John R. Roberts (1853–1949)
- 1911–1914: Esper Wayne Fitz (1989–1980), Wadham College
- 1913–1916: Frank Graham Swain (1892–1975), Wadham College
Although Parker did not attend an Oxford college as a Rhodes Scholar, he later served on Rhodes Scholar selection committees, including 1953, 1954, 1962, 1965 (Wyoming committee), and 1966, when he was a member of the Northwest District Committee with J. Earll Miller (1889–1970), professor emeritus of the University of Montana (retired in 1961).[6]
