Nozomi Nagata (永田 希, December 26, 1979 - December 7, 2024) was a Japanese author and book critic. Nagata's innovative contributions to literary criticism and his unique approach to reading have shaped the modern Japanese literary landscape.
Biography
[edit]Born in Connecticut, USA, in 1979, he initially aspired to become a physicist during his elementary school years. However, he eventually abandoned this pursuit due to a growing discomfort with the field of science.
Nagata's passion for literature was deeply influenced by his fascination with noise and industrial music. He began his professional journey at Touko Ai Co., Ltd., where he managed the reading community site "I Love Books!" (本だいすき!). As an official blogger, he introduced a variety of unique and thought-provoking books to readers. After leaving the company, he established his own book review platform, "Book News."
Nagata's identity as a book reviewer was shaped through the encouragement of fellow writer Nose Iseo, who suggested the title following Nagata's introduction of the work "New Music Deciphering." He served as a member of the book review committee for "Weekly Friday" and contributed to "Da Vinci" as a book observer, where he oversaw book selection and penned reviews for each issue. His writing extended to other notable publications, including "This Manga is Amazing!" (このマンガがすごい!), "Tosho Shimbun" (図書新聞), and "Weekly Dokushojin" (週刊読書人).
One of his major works, Tsundoku is the Perfect Reading Technique (積読こそが完全な読書術である), published in April 2020, explores the concept of tsundoku—the act of acquiring books and accumulating unread books—and how it relates to reading habits.
In 2017, Nagata self-published Psychopath's Reading Technique: How to Read in the Dark (サイコパスの読書術 暗闇で読む方法), presenting his unique perspectives on tsundoku. This work was later revised and published by East Press in 2020 under the title Tsundoku is the Perfect Reading Technique (積読こそが完全な読書術である). His other solo publications include The 5,000-Year History of Books and Money (5000年の本とお金の歴史, 2021, Shueisha Shinsho) and Only Rereading is a Creative Reading Technique (再読こそが創造的読書術である, 2023, Chikumashobo).
On December 7, 2024, he passed away at his home at the age of 44 due to an illness.
