Historically part of Roman Italy first and the Republic of Venice then (since the Middle Ages), Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia were inhabited by ethnic Italians (Istrian Italians and Dalmatian Italians), a significant Slavic population (Croats, Slovenians) and an Istro-Romanian minority. Become part of the Kingdom of Italy, the area was subdivided into various provinces: in Istria and Kvarner the provinces of Pola and Fiume, respectively; in Dalmatia the provinces of Zara, Spalato and Cattaro, forming the Governorate of Dalmatia, which got later absorbed into the IS Croatia, a World War II-era puppet state created ad hoc for the Italian prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Aosta, who officially reigned as Tomislav II but never assumed the effective control of the country, leaving it to the locals. |
