Covid-19 impacts rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics

[edit]

The Covid-19 pandemic unfortunately greatly impacted the 2020 Summer Olympics, such as attendance of some teams, performance, game cancellations, and teams were upset about results as well. Some of those events included :

- The Uganda's team was out of the qualifiers due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

- On July 23rd, The women's team of Russia had to undergo quarantine because of positive tests.

- Covid-19 has caused some teams to not be able to train for the Olympics, which drastically lowered their chances of winning, such as the men's US team, who finished 2nd at the 2019 World Cup.

- Some teams had to go through quarantine due to close contact. The reasons are that this sport cannot go with the regulations of social distancing and such, because 14 players are in close contact for the whole duration of the game. For instance, South Africa had to quarantine due to close contact.

- Fiji, winner of the Olympics 2020, had some major teams diminish their success due to uncertainty for each match and the lack of international competition. Some major teams being out, their victory was not taken seriously by Canada and Britain.
