March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Nice to see you around Enigma....;o)Keith-264 (talk) 13:15, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Just noticed that the dispute resolution has been closed - I'd forgotten all about it! Keith-264 (talk) 23:36, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi EnigmaMcmxc. As I'm sure you are aware, an objective admin has now reviewed the article and has also concluded that there are indeed problems with neutrality. However Keith-264 is still blocking the corrective action, despite abundant reliable sources, and is now also repeatedly reverting my neutrality tag. Are you still prepared to help with an RfC, or should this perhaps go to the NPOV Noticeboard instead? Wdford (talk) 08:44, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
Ah well, at least you tried....Keith-264 (talk) 23:31, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

18th Div

[edit]

I've sorted out my distractions for the moment and am going to have another dash tomorrow morning. Out of curiosity, why do you write Cite book instead of cite book? Keith-264 (talk) 22:59, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Copy and paste job. Does the capitalization effect the template?
Again, thank you for the help on this. The detail from the British OH has really improved the understanding of the fighting in Malaya, and hope it will do the same for on Singapore Island. I have slowly been working my way through the 59th Div article, only just got around to copyediting the Normandy section. Don't suppose you have any ideas for breaking up the long piece of text for 39-44?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 23:03, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

18th Infantry Division (United Kingdom)

[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article 18th Infantry Division (United Kingdom) has been completed.

This sentence appears in the lead: "The 18th Infantry Division was formed in September 1939, as a 2nd Line duplicate of the 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division."

"2nd Line" is used here, but "second line" is used elsewhere in the Background section in a foot note, and further in the section is written as "Second Line" several times. I looked online to try to resolve this inconsistency without success. Perhaps one of your sources will help with this.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:46, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

The Gospel according to Joslen uses the term "First Line" and "Second Line". I do not have the time today to make further edits, but will make this consistency fix as soon as possible. If you have additional questions, please let me know. I will endeavor to look over your work and thank you properly once I get the chance :) EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 23:00, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

For the Milhist co-ordinators, AustralianRupert and MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 10:54, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

[edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

This is to let you know that the 70th Infantry Division (United Kingdom) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 10, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 10, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:01, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

Not overlooked, actually. I would have reverted but for a recent discussion here. Whatever the motive, the IP has a point. I added the deleted statement to the aftermath section instead of restoring it to the infobox. Srnec (talk) 03:21, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

23rd Div number

[edit]

Hi

Thanks for the extra to the 23rd (N) division, it was little more than a stub when I first saw it, and I nearly had a relative in that formation, 11th DLI briefly then back to the 8th.

I had a note in the text about the choice of number for the division, 23rd not 63rd, and even thought there isn't a reference to that decision in any history I could find, I think I built a logical case for it, which may even have been the original one, who knows? OK, it wasn't explicitly referenced, but fluff!? Seriously, this may have been the case for a number of other WW2 2nd line Territorial divisions, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th and 38th, do you know if any of those has a reference to the numbering decision? Usedtoknowthat (talk) 15:12, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that commenting about a potential link to the First World War division was fluff, but tenuous and linking the two as related appears to be unsourced.
In the First World War, initially only the regular divisions were numbered. The Territorial Force had names "Northumberland Division", for example. The next numbered divisions came from the New Army. When those numbers were allocated, and the decision was made to deploy the Territorial Force, the territorials were numbered in the order they were deployed. Those First Line numbers were kept when the Territorial Army was created in the 20s.
When the order was given to expand the Territorial Army, per F. W. Perry, it appears no outline was given on numbering or naming schemes from division down to battalion. It appears they picked what they wanted, resulting in a mix of New Army numbers, First World War Second Line numbers, and some just continuing the overall number sequence or filling in the gaps.
With that said, it appears that only the 42nd and 43rd divisions used their First World War era 2nd line numbers: the 66th and 45th. The 44th's second line during the First World War was the 67th, but when they duplicated during the Second they chose the New Army Number. Likewise, for the 15th, 18th, and 38th; they don't match the original 2nd line numbers. Roger Hesketh, in his work on the Fortitude deception plan, notes that when the Army starting disbanding divisions in 1944 they renamed several to match numbers and names the public should have been familiar with, such as the 38th Welsh; famed for several notable battles during the First World War. One could speculate this was also part of the random numbering the divisions opted for ala the original note in the article of the First World War's 23rd Division being rather famous.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 20:44, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi. A few fiddly tweaks made, but it looks GAN ready to me. Gog the Mild (talk) 19:31, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Sturmvogel 66 -- Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:40, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

The article 23rd (Northumbrian) Division you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:23rd (Northumbrian) Division for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Sturmvogel 66 -- Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:42, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm wondering if you'd be interested in doing a joint GA nomination. The article is well-sourced and is stable, so seems like a good candidate. Please let me know. --K.e.coffman (talk) 01:26, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, but not for this article. I do not have the sources that deal with items outside of Villers-Bocage, so do not believe I would be able to help much if sections area questioned. I feel, based off the overhaul that you gave the article, you should take lead on this. Good luck :) EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 22:49, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for the feedback. --K.e.coffman (talk) 02:53, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Becke

[edit]

Hello EnigmaMcMxc, I now have both Becke volumes 2A and 2B for an entire month thanks to interlibrary loan. Do you have any articles other than the 55th Division that you want me to look over? Now that I have got both volumes, I am willing to "mine" them for all the data in them. Kges1901 (talk) 21:58, 1 August 2019 (UTC) Kges1901 (talk · contribs)

Thank you so much.
For the 55th, we need to whip the OOB and commander list into shape; make sure the page numbers are correct and so we can also remove the over-indulgence in sources and weblinks. If there is anything else in there that can help expand the article, that would also be great.
After that, I intended - after finishing off a few more Second World War focused articles - to give the 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division a shot, assuming I can locate the required sources; so whipping the OOB and commander list into shape with the sources you have as prep would be awesome :) Outside of that, I think I am going to have my hands full for the time being on articles. If you are willing, there are a bunch of TA articles that the sources could be used for though.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 18:06, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
  • How much do you want to have mentioned in the OOB? Becke has details on when all of the 1914 division units left for France which could be added to the 1914 OOB. For the 1916–1918 OOB, amalgamations can be listed (though I've written about the reduction of battalions in the prose section already). Kges1901 (talk) 21:09, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
I think that would be a valuable piece of information to add to the OOB. My last collaboration on a First World War article resulted in the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division, I believe the same level of information should be sufficient in the OOB. The additions you have made are very much appreciated.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 21:16, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Thanks. I've just found that thanks to Fold3 I have access to most of the Naval & Military Press reprints, for our purposes notably including Wyrall, Becke, Joslen, and both the WWI and WWII official histories. So if you want to take the 55th to a higher assessment level, I can assist as co-nominator. Kges1901 (talk) 22:13, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
I have a physical copy of Joslen (the N+M Press reprint), so I am okay on that front. Any further assistance from Becke and Wyrall (previously only limited access via Google Books) would be much appreciated. I am currently working on a basic outline for the Cambrai section, and plan on going over the prior sections to add historical assessment once I find suitable material.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 22:23, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Kges1901 (talk · contribs), does Becke state which artillery units were transferred from the division during the fighting at Cambrai? Coop doesn't mention it, and it is one of the factors raised by the court of enquiry.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 16:38, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Becke does not show there being any permanent artillery transfers from the 55th after January 1917, so if there as a transfer it would be a temporary attachment. Kges1901 (talk) 17:16, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for thatEnigmaMcmxc (talk) 17:18, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:38, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

@EnigmaMcmxc: Er, did my repaste remove your additions to the text? If so apols. Regards Keith-264 (talk) 08:18, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Looking over the change log from my last edit to the current version, I don't see any removed text. So I don't think so?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 09:18, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
That's a relief; it's looking very good. Keith-264 (talk) 09:56, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I am happy to copy edit this, but I have a lot on and so it will be at least a week, possibly two, before I can look at it in detail. If that is OK by you, I will label it "working" to reserve it. Alternatively, I could leave it and get round to it whenever I do, which leaves open the possibility that another GOCE editor will pick it up and deal with it more rapidly for you. Your choice, let me know which you prefer. Gog the Mild (talk) 10:22, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Your offer to work the article is much appreciated, and I do not mind waiting. I have suggested to Kges1901, on the article talkpage, that we await your effort.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 16:13, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

The Military history A-Class medal
On behalf of the Military History Project, I am proud to present the A-Class medal for 23rd (Northumbrian) Division, 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division, and 9th (Highland) Infantry Division. Peacemaker67 (talk) via MilHistBot (talk) 00:30, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

@Peacemaker67: Thank you :) EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 00:46, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I have finished this one. It may need a little more polish, but my preference is to let it go through GAN and I'll then give it a rapid once over as you nominate it for ACR. Gog the Mild (talk) 14:46, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Once again, thank you.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 00:20, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
