William Shirley Bayley (10 November 1861 - 13 February 1943)[1] was an American geologist.

Biography

  • Born 10 Nov 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland
  • Son of Robert P. Bayley, an importer of china,[1] and Emma Downing Bayley.
  • No mention of siblings
  • Father paralysed sometime before 1883. WSB attempted to help with family business but not suited and returned to academia.

Academic Career

  • Graduated from the Male High School, Baltimore aged 17
  • Prize winner, Peabody Institute of the City of Baltimore, for "fidelity to his studies and attainment therein, for correct moral deportment and personal habits, and for propriety of manners."[1]
  • Undergraduate: John Hopkins University, originally studying chemistry but found the "new and growing science of geology"[1] more interesting.
  • Received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1883.
