Ronald William Lightbown (b. 1932) is a prominent art historian specialising in works from the Italian Renaissance period.

Family

Son of Vincent and Helen (née Anderson) Lightbown[1]. Born Spring 1932 in Burness, Blackburn, Lancashire[2].

Married fellow art historian Mary Dorothy Webster[3] during the summer of 1962 in Hampstead, Middlesex[4].

Academia and Career

  • 1958: Joined V&A as an assistant curator[1].
  • 1973: Deputy keeper at V&A
  • 1976: Keeper of the Library at the V&A
  • "later": Keeper of Metalwork at the V&A
  • 1989: Retired alongside ceramics curator John Mallet and others, allegedly caused by the restructuring implemented by director Elizabeth Esteve-Coll - DAH says "very public controversy ensued about the Museum saving money by force-retiring its departmental scholars" -- citation given:[5].
  • 2005: Awarded Serenal Medal for Italian Studies by the British Academy[6]
