MissMe is an anonymous Montreal-based street artist, vandal, feminist, and activist. [1] Her street art uses wheatpaste images of women She is described as “An activist, feminist, and one of the most recognized outlaw artists in North America” [1] MissMe is represented by C.O.A gallery, a Montreal based contemporary art gallery.[2]
Work
[edit]MissMe also known as “The Artful-Vandal” [3], was working as a senior art director when she quit her job to pursue her art career.[4] She left a job that required her to produce and promote sexist popular media propaganda, in order to combat this very oppression through her powerful feminist art practice. [5] She states that her goal is; “Self-liberation, authenticity, and to be a loud counter-voice to the objectification of women in mainstream advertising.” [6]
MissMe’s renowned street art include large wheatpastes of female icons such as; Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, and Amy Winehouse. [7]
Her signature piece is a portrait of what MissMe terms a “Vandal”. It consists of a drawing of a life-sized naked woman wearing only a Mickey-Mouse mask. [8] She exhibits this art piece as wheatpastes street art at a global scale, as well as in art galleries. She has also created a video of her “Army of Vandals”. [9] In an interview with Vice Magazine, MissMe described that her “Vandal” creation is intended to communicate to women; “Empower yourself and empower other women, because we're not there yet and it's a beautiful thing to do.” [10]
She has paintings all over the world, in almost every continent and in November 2018, MissMe increased her notability when Madonna purchased one of her art pieces featuring, her “Vandal.” [11]
