My Sandbox

[edit]

About Me

[edit]

Hello, my name is Elyse! I am a big advocate for justice through history, and am focused on better integrating women in to the historical cannon. I have read reports that only about 17% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women,[1] so I am hoping to help address that with my account.

Education

[edit]

I have a B.A. in History from Cornell University and an M.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Work

[edit]

I am currently volunteering at the New York Historical Society's Center for Women's History.

Reasons for this Sandbox

[edit]

This is my personal wikipedia page, but I would like to help the historical society set up their own user page in order to increase people's ability to access our collections, and to contribute to women's history projects on wikipedia. I am pretty new to wikipedia editing in such a manner, and so I am hoping to experiment with code and design using my own sandboxes before we set up the NYHS page. I am very happy though to make any changes to my user page or sandbox to bring it up to Wikipedia standards, as I am sure that despite perusing policies and conditions as much as I can, I will not always be following it perfectly. I welcome feedback, so feel free to let me know if I should change anything about my user page!

Pages to Edit and Create

[edit]

I want to add to and clarify theory and methods on pages pertaining to history. I have noticed a lot of articles that don't really accurately reflect the scholarly debates and practices on different topics. For example, I plan on contributing to the talk page of and editing the Women's Rights timeline to make it less presentist, explaining that the notion of "rights" is not universal but an Enlightenment philosophy, and add some citations about how historians and anthropologists think about gender in different time periods and cultures. I think it would be useful for readers to see a section on historiography or scholarly debate on such broad topics. I also hope to add to other pages, such as the historiography pages more generally, to reflect a broader range of scholarly ideas and practices. I also plan to edit the women's suffrage timeline and others.

Practice

[edit]
  • Basics

  2. Now, I am writing in bold.

What is the difference between the Directory Page template and just the GLAM page template?
