Sisters of Nazareth School (also known as the Convent of Nazareth School) is a co-educational Catholic school located in Haifa, Israel. Spanning approximately over 4.2 acres, the school educates students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It also has a dormitory, a church, and a nuns' convent.
The school is ranked as one of the top twenty outstanding high schools in Israel. The percentage of graduates eligible for a Bagrut certificate approached 97% in 2020.
Recently, the school has been took over by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Israel.[1]
History
[edit]The original school was founded in France in 1822, and a few decades later, a branch of the school was opened in Nazareth. In 1858, the Haifa branch was built on King George Street near the Haifa port of that time. At the beginning of the 20th century, the school moved to a large building (which at the time was one of the first concrete buildings in Haifa) on Abbas Street.
The school is funded by tuition payments, support from the Catholic community, and partially by the Ministry of Education. In September 2015, the Minister of Education, Naftali Bennett, decided to cut the budget provided by the Ministry of Education to church-affiliated private schools in Israel, including "Sisters of Nazareth," by approximately 50%. Additionally, he imposed restrictions on the percentage of parental funding and on the funding for teacher professional development.
In April 2019, students from the school, along with students from the Leo Baeck School, participated in an international program for understanding and dialogue in the United States.
