Ludwig Neurath, also known as Ludwig von Neurath or Ludwif Neurath von Neudenegg, was an Austrian banker and art collector (17 August 1866 Vienna – 17 March 1941 Torquay, UK)
Life
[edit]Ludwig Neurath was born on August 17, 1866, the son of Michael Neurath et Leontine "Helene" Neurath.
Chairman of Creditanstalt für Handel und Gewerbe, had a significant art collection, which included work by Waldmuller[1], Mahlknecht[2], Gauermann[3], and many other artists. As a Jew, he faced increasing persecution after the Nazis came to power. His 1938 asset declaration listed movable property worth 11,500 Reichsmarks, including paintings, silverware, and furniture. In 1939, while preparing to flee to Britain, Neurath arranged for an inspection of his art by expert Eugen Primavesi, who cataloged ten carpets and fifty-three paintings, including Jakob Alt's Cholera Chapel. This painting was likely sold to fund his escape. In May 1939, the Österreichische Galerie acquired Alt’s Landscape with Cholera Chapel from art dealer Marie Wolfrum. Neurath escaped to London in August 1939, dying in 1941. His sons also fled. In 2010, the Art Restitution Advisory Board recommended returning Cholera Chapel to Neurath's heirs, as it was sold under duress.[4]
