From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toxic masculinity can be observed in everyday life, such as "locker-room talk" (FEM Magazine). Locker-room talk is a way for men to spew comments about women that are most commonly sexual. Because these men are in a specific environment, this behavior is normalized. It becomes normalized because, in such particular environments, people follow what is being said. The words influence those around them, causing a change in their way of believing. Speech in the locker rooms can persuade others to use the same exact speech because it can change an individual's beliefs (McGowan). Locker-room talk is highly harmful, mainly because it enforces the gender hierarchy that socialist feminism aims to diminish. Another example that exemplifies toxic masculinity is the phrase "boys will be boys". This term is usually used to justify an action of a male that is rude or inappropriate, which in turn harms women because it makes exceptions for men to behave however they please. These examples enforce sexist behaviors and give a false idea to men that they are allowed to treat women however they want.
