Winston is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera, EastEnders, played by Ulric Browne. Winston first appeared in episode 81, which was broadcasted on 26 November 1985, when he was seen working on a market stall on Bridge Street Market. On his time on the show, he has had a fling with Tracey (Jane Slaughter), a friendship with Mark Fowler (Todd Carty), Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and Tracey, and a feud with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt).
Storylines
[edit]In April 2008, Winston's niece, Keisha (Suzie McGrath) arrives in Walford. She leaves a month later with Gus Smith (Mohammed George).
On 6 March 2024, Winston celebrates his 60th birthday.
Development
[edit]In an interview, in 2001, Ulric Browne, who plays Winston, said that he "in about 90 per cent of episodes" and that everyone knows his face. and joked that playing Winston is "really handy" when he's trying to get "a good table in a restaurant."[1][2] He also expressed that he'd "like more lines" but is just happy to be on a show that he enjoys.[2]
Reception
[edit]In 2017, Joe Anderton from Digital Spy described Winston as a "EastEnders' one true hero" and a "one-line wonder".[3] In 2020, Sara Wallis and Ian Hyland from The Daily Mirror placed Winston 97th on their ranked list of the best EastEnders characters of all time, calling him a "faithful extra" and referring to him as a legend due him once to yelling "Bloody pedestrians" at Den.[4]
When the character spoke in 2017, a fan said on Twitter, "Sound the horn. Winston speaks!"[5] and another expressed, "Blimey, that's the most I have ever heard Winston say."[5] Another exclaimed, "Buzzing for Winston getting a speaking line in Easties tonight!"[6][7][8][9]
