Red Fićo ("Crveni Fićo"), officially Fićo gazi tenka! (Fićo tramples a tank!) is a monument in Croatia.[1]

Origin

[edit]

Shows a T-55 main battle tank being overrun by a Zastava 750 car, pipularly known as the Fićo in Croatia. Based on ebents following the 25 June 1991 Croatian declaration of independence from Yugoslavia. The Yugoslav army moved into Osijek on 27 Juen, meeting little opposition as Croatia had no army to defend itself. Croatian civilian Branko Breškić stopped his car at the interestion of Vukovarska street and Trpimira street and tried to block the passage of a T-55 tank. The tank was driven by a Croatian, Josip Ilić. He was ordered at gunpoint by the tank commander to drive over the car and did so, destroying it. Brano afterwards enlisted in the newly estabished Croatian Army and fought the Serbs in the Croatian War of Independence, being wounded a number of times.[1]

Footage was recorded by reporter Žarko Plevnik[2]

Footage of the car being crushed was broadcast worldwide and it became a symbol of the resistance. Branko had seen the tanks moving into the city and followed them before overtaking and tring to stop them. [3]

The incident was regarded as a mark of the will of the Croatian people to resist.[4]

Was one of the first attacks by the Serbian forces against civilians in Croatia. [5]

Monument

[edit]

The monument was inaugurated at the intersection on 27 June 2011, on the 20th anniversary of the event. The idea of showing the car trumphing over the tank came from a committee of war veterans. The monument memorialises the Croatian resistance against the Serbs and is the site of remembrance for those that died in the war.[1]

Installed on Osijek's veterans' day.[6]

To amrk the victory of the Croatian football team in July 2018 the Fico was painted in the white and red checks of the national team's strip.[7]

In October 2011 the Fico was vandalised, withs it back window broken and bonnet dented. It was repaired and CCTV cameras onstalled at the site.[8]

One the evening befote the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Homeland War residents light candles at the monument.[9]
