                               Tappy Winton

Tappy Winton was an Aberdonian local celebrity and shop owner during the early 20th century. He was well renowned in the local community for being thrifty and counting every penny that passed through his shop. It is this trait that perhaps very possibly helped start the stereotype of Aberdonian's being thrifty and mean. The local phrase "He could sell sh*te to a milkman" pays compliment to his ability to sell anything to anyone at any time.

There is no record of his birthdate or death which has caused some local historians to surmise that he was an illegal alien anxious to cover any traces of his furtive past. However, all local stories make no mention of him having an accent other than strong Aberdonian which is at odds with this theory. What is known about him is that Aberdeen was his home for many years and that his shop "Wintons" was a hub of activity in early 20th Century Aberdeen.

Wintons shop was one of the first newsagents in the city but strangely enough never sold any newspapers. This peculiar conundrum was crucial in establishing Wintons as a social hub at its location in Huntly Street.

By the 1950's, Tappy's reign as top business man in Aberdeen was coming to an end. The rise of supermarkets, television, and increased use of prophylactics meant that there was little need for Wintons peculiar style of shop. It closed doors for the last time in 1953 and the legendary owner was never seen in the city again. Rumours abound about his whereabouts but none can be confirmed.
