John S. Hougham link?

[edit]

Hello friend,

I was wondering why you seemed to have unlinked "solar compass" from the John S. Hougham entry? Many thanks, Gavin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anomicworld (talkcontribs) 23:58, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Secrets of the Wiki-trade

[edit]

@The Most Comfortable Chair: Thanks for adding GA topicon to article. I have seen this before of the bot saying it has failed when the GA reviewer puts it in as a pass. It seems to do this when the article failed GA before, so apparently it is a software problem with the bot. Maybe we will come across each other again. You do in-depth reviews and this one sure had me thinking. I'm hoping to get a total of 100 GAs before the end of the year.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:36, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you, and I hope you get there. How many do you have by now? — The Most Comfortable Chair 15:51, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
By my count of GA topicons on my User Page I now have 70. I do about 8 Good Articles per month, so if my luck holds out then I should have 100 for my birthday present. I was born 1/4/1945 and named after Douglas MacArthur - the World War II general.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 16:55, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
70 is an impressive number. When I was younger, I was given a book of quotes and it contained one entry of MacArthur that stuck with me; "I shall set my course to the end that no man need fear to speak the truth." — The Most Comfortable Chair 18:17, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
When It comes to making Good Articles I go by the expression, "I came through and I shall return." I have created 500 Did You Know articles and am returning to the best ones and upgrading those to Good Articles. Check out the records I made as told in the captions of the pictures. As you can see in my list of DYK credits I have done several multiple article hooks. One was for 16 articles in the same hook line and another was for 30 articles in the same hook line. Both these records at the time have since been broken by others.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:58, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
There happens to be an audio file on the Benjamin Loxley article which is the one that was an official Did You Know article on Wikipedia's main page 2 days after I created it.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:19, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
I am reading your Did You Know entries and they are very interesting. I am hooked. It takes time and a lot of research to write them and you have done some incredible work. I just finished working on my second article for DYK. — The Most Comfortable Chair 10:12, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
That was back in the day when one could borrow Inter-Library Loan hard copy books for references.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:07, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for reviewing my nomination. I have been meaning to ask you about sources you use. Is there a way to get access to online books and old articles that aren't available for everyone to read? I come across a lot of Google Book entries with snippet previews and I feel it would be very useful if I could access those to get more content. — The Most Comfortable Chair 13:51, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
@The Most Comfortable Chair: Well, that is a "no" and a "yes" at the same time. No, there is no secret place to find "Google Books" other than what you know about already. If it gives you a "Preview" only answer = that's about it for the book! HOWEVER, (there is always a however) there is a source I use extensively that pretty much gives me all the information to put together (or upgrade) an article. That is historical newspapers. You can get a free subscription (worth a couple of hundred bucks) from the Wikipedia Library. All you have to do is ask. If there are subscriptions available (odds are there is) then they will approve your subscription request for the reason you need it. The reason would be that you put together Did You Know articles -AND- Good Articles. You are also a GA reviewer! Just use these items for the reason you are requesting a subscription and they will give you an annual scription for free. When it comes up for renewal in a year, say you want it again and they will renew your subscription. I use newspaper clips extensively now-a-days (that I have been doing for years) since I can't get my hands on real hard copy books from universities. There is so much available in historical newspapers that it's a major source for me -AND- basically you could substitute the news clips for book references. Questions = I probably have an answer along these lines as I have created 500 Did You Know articles as you can see (and have a few trade secrets).--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:39, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
This last week I have done some major upgrading on the article I created of John Plankinton and used news clip references extensively. So, news clip refs can be a good substitute for actual hard copy library books. I can give you several more examples where I have used news clip refs for an article I created or upgraded. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:57, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
BTW, I keep track of my QPQs this way and then I can use them anytime in the future for a potential Did You Know article whenever I create it and nominate it.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
That is helpful, thank you for that. I will check out Wikipedia Library. John Plankinton was a good read and I see your point about old news clips. I have a few topics on my mind that I want to expand, and old news clippings would be perfect for them. By the way, a 97% DYK conversation rate is amazing, especially when you have written so many articles. — The Most Comfortable Chair 07:05, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Doug Coldwell: That is truly chronic. I was thinking of taking over the GA review. Your GA nominations

[edit]

Doug Coldwell, you do a lot of good work on articles at Wikipedia, and you've created well over a thousand of your own. At the moment you have 49 GA nominations, more than twice what the next nearest nominator has, and 1 in 12 of all the current nominations. As such, this is a significant demand on GA reviewing resources. While it's true that all GA nominations should not be made unless the articles that are clearly ready and meet the standards, given the sheer volume you submit, it is important for you to make sure yours do.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. You have, on a number of occasions, including very recently, nominated articles that have not been checked over prior to nomination—indeed, many of them have not appreciably changed in the years since you originally wrote them. Benjamin Loxley is a prime example: the shape it was in when you first nominated it and I reverted back in August, versus the shape it's in now—it's practically a new article. I thought, after that happened, you would be more careful going forward.

However, I have just today reverted two more of these nominations, both made in the past few days. Once again, I've run into prose that is problematic or sections that are confusing or not well thought out, among other issues. If someone has recently assessed the article as being C class, as was the case with Mary Florence Potts, and you haven't improved it since, it's a pretty good indication that it has a ways to go before it's ready to be nominated. A query to the assessor's talk page would, I'm sure, get their thoughts on what needs improvement without having to take the time of a GA reviewer, and with 494 GANs waiting for review as I type this, there is a clear benefit to holding off nominating articles that are not ready. Please reconsider your approach to nominating going forward, and only nominate articles that clearly meet the criteria. (If you thought these did, then perhaps you should have someone else look over your candidates prior to nominating.) Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:13, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

O.K. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:26, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
I was disappointed to see you returning to nominating articles that clearly fail to meet the GA criteria, including one you hadn't edited since 2008, taking you to a total of 54 extant nominations. That is not "O.K."; I will be reverting them. If this behavior continues, there will be a discussion at the GA nominations talk page. The current backlog drive should make no difference to articles being in proper nominating shape, with over 470 still-unreviewed nominations. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:18, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

William Beanes

[edit]

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article William Beanes has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

In the "Early life and education" this sentence appears: "Beanes was the third generation of the same name and the fourth generation American." While I have left it as is, I'm not clear what it actually means. This needs to be clarified.

In the "Personal life" section I masked a lot of detail which was really not biographical in my opinion.

Best of luck with the GAN.

Harv errors

[edit]

Hi, you reverted two of my edits (here and here) saying that they caused harv errors. I'm a bit confused by this; I don't see any additional error categories when looking at the previous version of the page (and I do have hidden categories enabled), and the pages don't use {{harvnb}} or {{sfn}} so I don't see how I'd break a link used by them. Can you explain my mistake so I don't make it in the future? --Pokechu22 (talk) 18:02, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

@Pokechu22: On my screen one shows this way and another shows this way. So that you can also see Harv Errors get the tool from the Help Desk. They will also give you instructions on how to install the "app" on your computer. Obviously you don't have this tool now, or else you would have seen these immediately and corrected them. Does that help? --Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:49, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. User:Ucucha/HarvErrors is the tool. It seems the warning message appeared because the page doesn't use {{harvnb}} or {{sfn}} (instead just writing the footnote explicitly without a link, e.g. "Catton, pp. 117-128"), so when I converted to {{cite book}}, there wasn't a link. Prior to April 2020, {{cite book}} didn't automatically work with those templates, but now it does and the tool finds the missing link.
I've redone my edit to A Stillness at Appomattox while also adding {{sfn}}, and redone my edit to Conclusion of the American Civil War with ref=none (I don't want to convert everything there to {{sfn}}).
I'll keep this warning in mind when doing further editing, but I won't worry about it in all cases (e.g. prolation canon has it now, but it's currently lacking footnotes of any kind and the fix there would be to add footnotes, which I'm not prepared to do.) There is an alternate version of the tool (User:Trappist the monk/HarvErrors) that doesn't show the warning if the page doesn't use any kind of harv referencing, which might be useful. --Pokechu22 (talk) 19:58, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
@Pokechu22: Looks good now - no Harv Errors show. Thanks for info. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:03, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
