"Suburban Legends"[a] is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Written by Swift and Jack Antonoff, it was originally intended to be a track on Swift's fifth studio album, 1989 (2014), but it was ultimately scrapped from the final release. It was later recorded by Swift for her fourth re-recorded album, 1989 (Taylor's Version), where it was released via Republic Records.
Background and release
[edit]In 2018, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift signed a contract with Republic Records after the expiration of her previous contract with Big Machine Records.[2] The following year, American business magnate Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine for $330 million USD, including all of the original masters of Swift's songs from her time at the record label. Swift claimed that she attempted to purchase the masters but was treated unfavorably, and in response, she began re-recording her previous albums with Big Machine.[3] By doing so, Swift had full ownership of the masters and could control the licensing of her songs.[4] Swift released three of the six albums slated to be re-recorded, Fearless (Taylor's Version) (2021), Red (Taylor's Version) (2021), and Speak Now (Taylor's Version) (2023), all of which featured "From the Vault" tracks that were initially scrapped for the release of the original albums.[5]
On October 27, 2023, Swift released 1989 (Taylor's Version), a re-recording of her 2014 album 1989, which strayed away from Swift's previous country songs and consolidated her as a pop singer.[6] Five "From the Vault" songs were included in the re-recording, with four of the five having American musician Jack Antonoff as a co-writer.[1] Officially titled "Suburban Legends (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)", it was released as the twentieth and penultimate track of the album's standard release.[7] The song was performed for the first time by Swift during her concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as part of the Eras Tour, and, along with "Stay Beautiful", was played in honor of Ana Clara Benevides after her death at one of Swift's concerts.[8]
Composition and lyrics

Reception
[edit]The song received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Shaad D'Souza of Pitchfork described Swift's songwriting as the "dense, largely rhymeless run-on style that defines later records like Folklore and Midnights." Jeff Nelson of People stated that "like most of these new vault tracks, 'Suburban Legends' sounds like it would fit nicely alongside Midnights tracks as they do 1989 highlights."
