The "shrooms" are the primary offense and defense. The night levels also feature graves that are randomly placed on the lawn on the right side of the screen that cannot be planted on unless they are removed by a gravebuster.[2]

[edit]

The pool levels take place in the backyard and each have 6 lanes: the top and bottom two being land, and the middle two being water. In the water lanes, special water zombies with resemblance to those of the land will swim through the pool.

In the pool, regular plants can only be planted on top of a lily pad. A few plants cannot even be planted on the lily pads.

Levels 4-1 thru 4-10: Fog

[edit]

The fog levels also take place in the backyard and each have 6 lanes: the top and bottom two being land, and the middle two being water. They are at night. In each of these levels, the right side of the screen is covered in fog, which obscures the site of approaching zombies. The player can clear the fog, either by placing a plantern, which clears the fog from half the screen as long as the plantern has not been eaten by a zombie, or with a blover, which clears away all the fog, but only temporarily.

Vasebreaker level. In this level, there are 5 lanes of vases and no water. There are 3 sets of vases to break, with 3, 4, and 5 columns respectively. Vases can contain either zombies (the varieties listed to the left) or plants (including pea shooters, snow pea shooter, squash, or hypnoshrooms). The object of Vasebreaker is to break all vases simply by clicking them (or touching them on touch-screen devices) and kill all zombies that come out of the vases with the plants that come out of other vases.

During this level, the screen flashes constantly. Most of the time, it is dark, and it every several seconds, it flashes for a moment, allowing the player to see the screen along with all plants and zombies. When the screen is dark, plants can still be placed, and plants and zombies are in action, though not visible.

Levels 5-1 thru 5-10: Roof

[edit]

Levels 5-1 thru 5-10 are played on the roof. These are all daytime levels, except or level 5-10, which is night.

On the roof, all plants must be planted in flower pots. Level 5-1 offers 5 columns of flower pots, level 5-2 offers 4, and each subsequent level offers 3. There are 5 lanes of zombies.

The only plants that can shoot full range are the catapult plants, which include the cabbage-pult, kernel-pult, and melon pult. Other shooting plants can shoot across part of the roof, but due to the slanted nature of the roof, cannot shoot past slants. Catapult plants, however, can be used on other levels of subsequent games.

2 All plants on this level are distributed by conveyor belt. These include flower pots, chompers, cherry bombs, and pumpkins. The level includes conehead and buckethead zombies, but their difference is insignificant, because all zombies are killed either by a chomper, a cherry bomb, or a lawn mower. Only the ladder zombies have any additional significant effect by leaving their ladders on pumpkins, and the bungee zombies by stealing plants.

Dr. Edgar Zomboss
0 This is the final level of the game. Unlike all the other roof levels, which are in the daytime, this one is at night. In it, the player faces Dr. Edgar Zomboss, the largest zombie of all. Dr. Zomboss cannot be killed with any plants; he is killed only by passing the level.

Dr. Zomboss throughout the level tosses many types of zombies on the roof. He also hurls fireballs, which must be neutralized with ice-shrooms, and iceballs, which must be neutralized with hot peppers.

All plants are distributed via conveyor belt. These include flower pots, cabbage-pults, kernel-pults, melon-pults, hot peppers, and ice-shrooms.

Dr. Zomboss destroys plants that are planted close to him by stepping on them. He also destroys plants that are planted far away from him by dropping a truck on them, taking out an area of plants 2 lanes by 3 columns. Fireballs and iceballs also destroy plants.

Upon successful completion of the level, the player wins.
