Hydropower in the Mekong River Basin

  • Potentially add a subsection on social impacts of hydropower in the local community. Previous coursework has focused environmental ramifications and effects on the local communities along the Mekong River. This subsection would focus on the short term and long term impacts that the building of dams has had on the communities in terms of livelihood and land use. Another aspect of this subsection would also focus on potential consequences and ramifications from dam breakages.

  • The topic on the social impacts of the Mekong hydropower infrastructures is a very large one. There are many academic sources on it. Let's not use the last source; it is a magazine article. As you go through your sources, you might need to think about a focus for your paragraph.
  • To widen your bibliography, do some further search on two first hydropower dams on the Mekong mainstream that we covered in class: Xayaburi Dam and Don Sahong Dam. There've been works on the Nam Theun 2 as well. For instance, this book has one section on social and environmental impacts. Shoemaker, Bruce ; Robichaud, William ; Santasombat, Yos ; Hirsch, Philip. Dead in the Water: Global Lessons from the World Bank’s Model Hydropower Project in Laos. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 2018.[1] (You want to find a e-copy of the book through our library system - here is the link). When you use this source, cite the specific book chapter that you use.

Next steps: 1) Think about the focus of your paragraph and consider to expand your bibliography. 2) Start to work on your Draft in your Sandbox Draft. Make sure you've carefully read the guide on your Sandbox Draft how to copy and paste materials in this sandbox.
