August Agatz was born on November 20, 1904, and was a German painter and Sculptor who studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1927-1929. Agatz grew up around a tradition of art having many childhood friends that grew up to be artists such as Heinrich Brocksieper, Albert Buske, Max Gebhard, Waldemar Alder, Reinhard Hilker, Günther Oberste-Berghaus, and Emil Schumacher. Agatz enrolled at the Bauhaus in 1927, and took his prerequisite course under Josef Albers and worked in material and metal working. [1]

Following his time at the Bauhaus, Agatz married Anna Rudolph in 1929 and had a son, Adrian. Agatz continued metalworking at the Frankfurt Art School through 1929 and 1930. Agatz joined the KPD, the Communist Party of Germany, and with the arrival of the the National Socialist Party in 1933, he was arrested and sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. Agatz was released from prison and worked at a factory from where he was drafted into the 999 Light Afrika Divison (Wehrmacht) in Greece.[2]
