Biography

[edit]

He studied at the A-68 Rafael Sotomayor School, in Las Condes. Later on, he studied at the Concord School (previously called The Marshall School). He finished high school through free exams in a school in San Miguel in 2009.[1]

Musical career

[edit]

Initially he was vocalist for the Chilean band Patiperros under the name Tati Swing, with which he often played rock-and-roll music.[2] Later on, he abandoned it to focus on his career as a solo player.[3] His musical style has often been compared to Elvis Presley's.[4]

Political career

[edit]

In 2006 he was seen performing a Roman salute in front of the casket at Augusto Pinochet's funeral.[5] His first registered arrests occurred in 2008, when he was arrested multiple times on account on shoplifting, stealing, physically assaulting a minor, and threatening a woman.[2] At first, he joined Legion 38 (in Spanish, Legión 38),[2] a neo-Nazi group which he abandoned to enter pinochetism and later he approached libertarianism after reading works from Ayn Rand.[6] He began his YouTube channel, where he would discuss politics, in 2016.[7]

In 2018, he denounced Workers' United Center of Chile for a rally in support of the Cuban revolution in which clashes occurred.[8] Izquierdo sold shirts making fun of the victims of the military dictatorship in Chile led by Augusto Pinochet similar to the ones from Christopher Cantwell found on eBay.[9][10] He publicly refused to apologize for the act, claiming that he does not understand how there are "people who are so foolish and stupid that they get mad at a shirt".[11] A person took pictures of himself wearing said shirts made by Izquierdo next to the right-wing Chilean politician José Antonio Kast.[5]

In 2019, he asked for his followers to "cover up" a feminist march in support of legal abortion, which was interpreted by various people to be a "threat".[1][12] The idea of self-defense arises after the attack suffered by the "March For Jesus" (pro-life and anti "gender ideology") on October 27, 2018 by groups calling themselves Antifascists'[13] and the attack on a demonstration against illegal immigration in March of the same year, among others.[14]

During 2020 he exercised the role of self-defense in the "Rechazo" marches, physically attacking several attackers, threatening to kill them at certain points.[1][15][16][17][18] He was also dennounced by the Independent Democratic Union, a center-right Chilean party, for using one of its locations.[2][4][18] Due to this, he was fiscalized by the Public Ministry of Chile.[19][20] After being trialed in August 2020, he was put under home arrest due to his various threats.[21][22] Later that year, he threatened to go on a hunger strike if this was not lifted.[23]

In late 2020, the dead body of a female activist, María Isabel Pavez Zamora, was found in his mother Isabel's apartment.[24][25] Sebastián Izquierdo has publicly denied any involvement in the death, and asked people to "not politicize" the situation.[26]

Ideology

[edit]

He is the leader of the Chilean organization Revolutionary Capitalism (in Spanish, Capitalismo Revolucionario, CR), which he founded in 2016. It is also the name of his YouTube channel.[7] Izquierdo was in the foundation of The Vanguard (in Spanish, La Vanguardia) which was present in several right-wing protests supporting the "Reject" option in the months leading up to the 2020 Chilean national plebiscite. However, Court No. 8 of Guarantee of Santiago on September 2020 prohibited both him and his friend Belmar from participating in any type of public demonstration or meeting.[27]

He is also a supporter of a theocratic and feudal monarchy, a system he sees as part of the natural order.[28]

Even though he has often been accused of fascism[29][4][5][17] and belonging to the alt-right,[1][30] he has denied these claims, calling himself a in that time "libertarian"[29] a political position that now he disagrees on.[31] He has publicly declared himself to be against abortion, immigration, the "gender ideology", and the primera línea protesters.[1]

He is friends with Roberto Belmar Vergara, an openly fascist activist[20] informally known as Chopper or Soa Meche.[32] After Belmar was attacked by protesters, Izquierdo swore to get revenge on the attackers, who he accused of being members of Antifa.[33] He has also defended the actions of John Cobin, an American-Chilean counter-protester who shot a man in the leg during an incident during the 2019–20 Chilean protests, calling him a "hero" and a political prisoner.[34] He is also a well-known supporter of Donald Trump and the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol.[35]
