Open-sourcing of Meridian 59

[edit]

As of February 2010 Meridian 59 has been turned over to the original technical developers, Andrew and Chris Kirmse. On September 15, 2012 the game was released to the public at no charge to the players (Freeware) and most of the source code was released under the GPLv2 license.[1] Previously, Meridian 59 had an international presence with servers operating out of Germany, run by the company MDO (active 2002-2009)[2] and Russia in addition to a Sacred Haven (non-PvP) server operated by Skotos[3], all of which are no longer operational. Meridian 59 is currently active on three servers, all of which operate out of the United States: two servers run by the original developers (known as servers 101 and 102) and a third operated by the Open Meridian Project (known as server 103).
