Trickshotting
[edit]Trickshotting is an advanced technique that is preformed by members of the Call of Duty community. The aim of a trick shot is to get the game winning kill cam on your opponent without aiming down the sights of your gun in the most creative and stylish way possible. Trick shots are always preformed with a sniper rifle and require many complex button inputs in order to be completed successfully. Hitting a trickshot in the game winning kill cam is commonly referred to in the Call of Duty community as “hitting a clip.”
History of Trickshotting
[edit]Trickshotting’s origins began on Youtube. Content creators would create montages featuring the shots to show off their unique skill and style. Trickshotting began to see a rise in popularity following the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Youtube content creators began making montages featuring many of the shots that were being taken. These videos became extremely popular as more and more players began to realize the difficulty associated with hitting even a single shot, let alone consistently hitting multiple. One of the earliest known trickshotters is zzirGrizz. Though he does not take credit for the original idea of trickshotting he was definitely one of its pioneers and is a substantial influence on its overall success and notoriety throughout the Call of Duty community. zzirGrizz experimented with many different variations of trickshots and would upload montages to his channel featuring some of his new creations. Players watching the montages created by zzirGrizz and many other content creators would try and recreate these shots online and new techniques and variations were discovered for trickshotting. When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released in November of 2009 trickshotting underwent a drastic change. With the introduction of the game winning kill cam players were able to see the final kill of each round in slow motion. This new mechanic allowed trickshotters to not only broadcast their skills on youtube, but also allowed it to show through the game. This opened the playing field and users who weren’t youtube content creators began trying to trickshot. As time went on it was no longer considered skilful to get trickshots throughout the game, the only shot that mattered was the one the player hit in the game winning kill cam. Eventually hitting a trickshot in the game winning kill cam became known as a “clip.” Other members of the Call of Duty community deemed only users who were hitting clips skilful. The difficulty of trickshotting effectively differentiated lucky players from skilful ones. Youtube content creators who were consistently hitting clips were widely respected by the community and found success in the growth of their channels. In November 2010 Call of Duty: Black Ops was released. To the dismay of many Call of Duty players trickshotting in this game was made more difficult than ever before and many of the older mechanics and techniques from past Call of Duty games were removed. Though it seemed this would be the end of trickshotting, later editions of Call of Duty, including the most recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, had the original trickshotting mechanics returned to the game.[1]
Trickshotting methods
[edit]Solo trickshotting: Team Death Match This is the most difficult way to hit trickshots. The difficulty stems mainly from the fact that your intended target can be killed by another player in the game, thus ruining your shot. In this case, you must also rely heavily on your team not to take the last kill of the game and also not to constantly give the opposing team kills. Both of these scenarios lead to the loss of a clip and should be avoided.[2]
Solo trickshotting: Free For All This is one of the easier game modes to hit a trick shot in, provided you are a proficient Call of Duty player. The objective in a free for all game mode is to quickly acquire 29 kills much faster than your opponents. This leaves the trickshotter plenty of time to attempt to hit their clip and ensures that weak teammates do not prevent the player from being able to hit their clip.[3]
Solo trickshotting: Search & Destroy This is another effective game mode to hit clips in. Players in search and destroy don’t respawn after they are killed and there are multiple rounds, allowing for multiple potential clips by trickshotters. The main objectives in search and destroy are also hotspots for player activity so it makes it easier for a player to line up their shot.[4]
Team Trickshotting: This is an extremely popular method of trickshotting. The main premise is that you get a team of players who are all trickshotting and play the game until there is only one kill left. At this point each trickshotter begins to take their shots until someone hits a clip and ends the game.
Stunning: A useful technique that can be used to hit a trickshot is by throwing a stun[5] or concussion grenade[6] at the enemy. This makes it so that their movement is slow and impaired, allowing for shots taken by the trickshotter to connect more easily.
Tagging: This technique requires the player to wound the enemy slightly before attempting their shot. This is a useful way to avoid getting hit markers and makes it easier to hit a wall bang[7], also known as shot through a wall.
Types of Trickshots
[edit]- Suicide shot:[8] A suicide shot is essentially when a player attempts a trick shot that would lead to their death if the shot was missed.
- Nac:[9] A nac is essentially the rapid pressing of the Y button (Xbox controller) during a specific reload animation. If it is timed correctly the animation is cancelled and your weapon is switched instantly.
- Titty Nac:[10] Cocking back your shotgun then instantly preforming a nac. This gets the shell eject animation of the shotgun and also instantly switches to your sniper rifle.
- Insta-swap:[11] This requires a player to take out their primary grenade and then switch their weapon. If done correctly the grenade is briefly shown on screen before instantly swapping to the player’s sniper rifle.
- Silentshot:[12] This shot is achieved when the player activates either their lethal or secondary equipment at the same time that they fire their sniper rifle. If performed correctly the shot in the game winning kill cam makes no sound.
- Pistol switch:[13] This shot requires a player to fire a round of their pistol, swap to a shock charge and then insta-swap to their sniper rifle.
