"Coming on home soon" written by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E.B. Lewis, is a Caldecott honor book, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers in 2004.
Synopsis
During world war II, women were being hired since all the men were off at war. Ada Ruth's mother goes to Chicago to search for a job leaving Ada with her grandmother. She finds a job washing trains but Ada is missing her terribly. She even took in a stray cat to fill the void left by her mother's absence and always waited for the mailman hoping she would receive a letter from her mother saying that she would be home soon. Eventually her wish comes true and she receives a letter from her mother saying she is coming home soon. Ada displays strength and patience in waiting for her mother during hard times.
