The disappearance of Kuchisake Onna

Re-writing an urban legend Looking at creating suspense, tension and fear in the reader.

Daisy wants it to be realistic, so the urban legend is more likely to be believed.

Daisy has modernised the urban legend to make it feel more present. This also heightens the ‘fear factor’ as the reader starts to imagine themselves in the vulnerable position of the victims. It also gives more credibility to the story.

The story of Kuchisake Onna starts in 2007.

History Boyfriend cut Onna’s mouth when he was trying to kill her. He thought she was cheating on him, but she was not. He is the bad guy here.

She survives and kills all of the children on his side of the family. Since then, she has been killing children all over Japan. But how?

The scary bit She waits for kids going home from school. She waits for them in alleyways. She’s dressed as a police officer and pretends she has something to ask them. She wears a mask.

The deadly questions She asks them a question “Am I pretty? If the children answer “No” she kills them. If they answer ‘Yes’ she takes her mask off. “How about now?” If they say “No” she kills them. If they say “Yes” she says “Do you want one too?” And she slits the cheeks of the victim. It’s known as the Onna smile!

How to get away from her 1. Kids say “We can help you and kill other people.” They then think of a way to buy time.

2. “I’ll go to Tesco’s and grab a Covid mask I’ll be back in 5. Do you want anything from Tesco’s?” And then they don’t come back

However this particular story is widely believed to be untrue.

Another rumour - to get away from her is to - Shine a light in her eyes as they are infected and she is half blind.

Offer to give her lipstick - as she has a Lipstick allergy. “You look so beautiful and if you wear this lipstick you will look even better.” She puts lipstick on and she screams.

Who does she target? Kills the children of parents that have cheated. She uses a Kitchen knife.

Police turning up late McDonald’s cup in his hand - joke hook.

Is she still alive? Last spotted South Korea in 2019. Some people think she died and some people have claimed to have killed her and some people say she is still alive.

Rumour - People dress up as her; to try and pretend she is still alive - YouTube videos.

Other women/men who have been cheated on - dress up as her and murder the families of those that have crossed them.

There have been 50 cases so far where the killer has said they are copying Onna.
