Malik Henry is a quarterback for the Frisco Fighters of the Indoor Football League. Between 2016 and 2019, he played college football at Florida State, Independence Community College (ICC), and Nevada. While playing at ICC, Henry was prominently featured in seasons 3 and 4 of the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U.
Early life
[edit]Henry was born in 1988 in Long Beach, California. He was a starting quarterback at Westlake High School in Thousand Oaks, California, where he had 4,413 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over two years.[3]
Henry committed to playing for the Florida State seminoles in November 2014, then announced he was transferring to IMG Academy, a renowned sports-oriented private school in Bradenton, Florida, for his senior year, to be closer to his eventual college destination.[3] When IMG Academy's head football coach, Chris Weinke, left to be quarterback coach for the St. Louis Rams, Henry returned to California and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School his senior year.[4]
In his senior year at Long Beach, Henry threw for 1,410 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 1 interception. ESPN ranked Henry the #17 overall recruiting prospect nationwide and #1 from California for the class of 2016.[5]
College career

[edit]Henry attended Florida State as a freshman in 2016, but did not appear in any games. On August 20, 2016, Henry was suspended for violating team rules, although the team declined to elaborate on the violation or the length of the suspension.[6] Henry later said the suspension was due to him missing classes and team functions, which was a result of him returning to California to deal with family health issues.[4] In December 2016, Henry disclosed his intent to transfer from Florida State at the end of the school year.[1]
ICC and Last Chance U
[edit]In 2017, Henry transferred to Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, after being recruited by head coach Jason Brown.[7] The Netflix college football documentary series Last Chance U began filming at ICC that same year.[4] Henry played at ICC for two years, in 2017 and 2018, appearing in seasons 3 and 4 of Last Chance U.
In 2017, Henry played in 9 games at ICC, throwing completing 132 of 245 passes for a total of 1,383 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.[5]
In 2018, Henry started two games, completing 19 of 43 passes for 237 yards, with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.[5] ICC coach Jason Brown benched Henry for most of the 2018 season. Brown was fired shortly after the 2018 season ended, and Henry transferred from ICC (a junior college) to Nevada (a NCAA Division I school).[7]
Henry joined the Nevada Wolf Pack football team as a walk-on in January 2019.
In October, Nevada removed Henry from the team for academic reasons.
Professional career
[edit]Henry was signed by the Frisco Fighters of the Indoor Football League and promoted as part of their 2021 roster.[7]
