2011–2016: Career beginnings and Another City

[edit]

Phạm Ngọc Lân graduated from Hanoi Architectural University in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in urban planning.[1] During his university years, Lân became interested in photography and video production as hobbies.[1] He produced two photographic series and one of his works was featured in Trương Quế Chi's experimental art exhibition in 2018.[2] After working in town planning for two years following graduation, Lân became disillusioned with unrealized projects and decided to pursue filmmaking instead.[1] He took a non-profit filmmaking course and attended screenings and exhibitions at foreign cultural centers, which he credits with shaping his cinematic vision.[1][2]

Lân was inspired by Vietnamese director Trần Anh Hùng (pictured in 2023) during one of his filmmaking course

During his filmmaking classes, Lân directed two short films before creating his graduation project in 2011, the short film Chuyện mọi nhà (The Story of Ones).[a][2][1] The short film features monologues of radio and television programs set against different scenarios.[2][4] Anh Trâm of VNExpress praised the director for "provoking viewers to think and comment on society and the human condition".[4] The Story of Ones competed in the Local Competition category at the YxineFF 2012 short film contest in Vietnam,[5] and was screened at Visions du Réel in Switzerland[6] and Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival in Denmark.[3][2]

In 2013, Lân attended the filmmaking course Gặp gỡ mùa thu (Autumn Meeting) taught by Vietnamese director Trần Anh Hùng, who empowered Lân and helped shape his career path.[2][7] During the course, he wrote the script for his second short film, Một thành phố khác (Another City), which tells the stories of five people living quietly in a busy city.[2][7] The script was included in the Short Film Station, as part of Berlinale Talents, in 2015.[7][8] Lân shot Another City over 11 days in Hanoi and Bản Giốc – Detian Falls (Cao Bằng), before spending the next 6 months producing it.[7][9] Lân and the producers cast Vietnamese actresses Minh Châu and Thùy Anh in the leading roles.[3][7] The $8,000 production budget was mostly covered by a $6,000 grant from the Denmark – Vietnam Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF).[9][7] Vietnamese director Phan Đăng Di called the film a "claustrophobic realistic picture" that blends reality and fantasy.[10] Lân won several awards for Another City, including the Uppsala Award in Memory of Ingmar Bergman and Best Young Short Film Director at the Hanoi International Film Festival.[11][12] The film was also nominated in the Short Film categories at the 2016 Berlinale and Singapore International Film Festival.[13][14]

2017–present: Breakthrough and first feature film

[edit]

In 2018, Lân's third short film, Một khu đất tốt (Blessed Land), won the top prize at the CJ Short Film Project, a short film competition sponsored by the CJ Cultural Foundation and CJ CGV. The director received the ₫200 million ($8,590 in 2018) prize and used it to produce the film.[15][16] A 20-minute black-and-white film, Blessed Land depicting two storylines that occurred more than 10 years apart in the same location: the mother and daughter's search for their father's grave at the cemetery and the gossip of the tycoon and his mistress at the golf course.[17] With the film, Lân intended to "sensitively look at levels of humans' artifact and its legacy on nature".[18] At the 2019 Vienna Shorts, Blessed Land was praised as an "original and wildly imaginative" film by the jury,[17] and awarded the Best Film of the Competition – Fiction & Documentary prize.[16][19] The film was awarded top prizes at the Uppsala International Short Film Festival and Montréal Festival of New Cinema.[20] It was Lân's second film to be nominated for the Short Film Golden Bear at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.[21]
