SINGAPORE INDIAN ACHIEVERS CONTRIBUTION

Singapore Indians have made great strides in all stratum of society in their chosen profession, sports, social, cultural, civic, charity, politics, education and others. They have in the process contributed significantly to the Singapore society.

This section chronicles their services in appreciation of their invaluable contributions in order that the present and future generations be acquainted with such achievers and remember them for posterity. 1 NARAYANA PILLAI FIRST INDIAN TO SET FOOT IN SINGAPORE SOIL

When Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles made his second trip to Singapore in May 1819, he had in his esteemed retinue a certain personality called Naraina Pillai. Apart from being a businessman and a close friend of Raffles’, Pillai was also helping the latter in the British administration of Penang. At Raffles’ request, Pillai agreed to accompany him to Singapore for possible business ventures and at the same time assist with administrative services in Singapore. Thus, Naraina Pillai became the first Indian (of Tamil origin) to set foot in Singapore....

2 C V DEVAN NAIR was Singapore's third president and the first of Indian extract. His presidency lasted between 1981 and May1985 when he abruptly resigned the office before his term ended, citing health reasons. An activist-turned-unionist-turned-politician, the one-time colourful, controversial and resolute Nair was a man with a soft spot for English Literature and the sonnets of Shakespeare. Even as President he would visit schools and live out the passion he always had for the English language and the finer semantics of literature. But he will be remembered more for his unassuming public profile in spearheading the drive to inaugurate the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) the omnibus label that comprised all the trade unions in Singapore...

3 S R NATHAN Sellapan Ramanathan was born on 3 July 1924. He was elected uncontested as the sixth President of Singapore and sworn in on 1 September 1999. He was again elected unopposed in his second term in 2005. He was the longest serving president when he finished his term on 31 August 2011. Somewhat of a martinet who never failed to exercise in the morning, the former president is best remembered for his unwavering support and defence of Singapore's interests. The one-time Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the face weathering the cascade of brutal American denunciations in the caning of US teenager Michael Fay for vandalism in 1994.

Arumugam Ponnu Rajah (b. 23 November 1911, Port Dickson, Malaya - d. 28 September 1999, Singapore), better known as AP Rajah, was Singapore's first High Commissioner to Britain. With a penchant for politics he was a well-regarded Supreme Court Justice who remained on the High Court Bench even after he had turned 70. An English-educated liberal, Rajah received his early education in Malaysia and Singapore. Thereafter he headed to England where he obtained a degree in law. Upon his return to Singapore, Rajah started his own law firm and was called to the Singapore Bar in 1938...
