Modern set-up[edit]

League[edit]

The women's league structure in Scotland consists of three levels, a Premier League and a Football League with First and Second Divisions, but the second division is split into four regional leagues (North, East & Central, Southeast and Southwest).

Scottish Women's Premier League[edit]

Scottish Women's Football League[edit]

The Football League is a step below the Premier League. It currently consists of a two level structure with First and Second Divisions. The second division is split into four regional leagues (North, East & Central, Southeast and Southwest). The four way split in the 2012 season was North,[1] East,[2] Southeast[3] and West.[4] The Football League has consisted of a two level structure since season 2008-09. The second division has consisted of four regional leagues since the 2012 season. Prior to this the second division consisted of three regionals leagues from season 2008-09 to the 2012 season. The three regional league split in season 2008-09 was North,[5] Southwest & West[6] and Southeast, East & Central.[7] In 2010, the three way split changed to North,[8] West[9] and East.[10] It remained the same for the 2011 season.[11][12][13]

Prior to season 2008-09, the Football League consisted of a three level structure, a First Division, a Second Division and a Third Division. The Third Division consisted of two regional leagues, a North and South split. This structure was substained during seasons 2006-07[14][15] and 2007-08.[16][17] During season 2007-08, an end of season split took place in the Second Division,[18] and both Third Divisions (North[19] and South)[20] (similar to the end of season split in the men's Scottish Premier League).

Cup competitons[edit]

The national cup competition in women's football in Scotland and the top domestic cup competition in Scotland. One of the three majors in women's football in Scotland, along with the League title and the Premier League Cup.

Introduced in 2002 along with Premier League. It replaced the Scottish League Cup as the top league cup comeptition in the women's game in Scotland. Unlike the Scottish League Cup that allowed entry of all football league teams, this is single division competition, which is exclusively for teams that are members of the Premier League.

It was the top competition in women's football in this country until the introduction of the Premier League Cup in 2002. It was open to all football league teams in the women's game. It was one of three majors along with League title and Scottish Cup until the Premier League Cup was introduced.

Since the Premier League had its own League Cup competiton, the Scottish League Cup was renamed the Scottish Football League Cup in 2002. It was a competition for all women's football league teams outside of the Premier League (equivalant to the men's Scottish Challenge Cup).

Launched in 2012. It's a competition exclusively for teams who are members of the First Division.

Launched in 2012. It's a competition exclusively for teams who are members of the regional second divisons.

1Technically the Scottish League Cup, Scottish Football League Cup and Scottish First Division Cup are the same trophy. But the different format of competitions elevate each renaming of the trophy to a different status. After the Premier League Cup was introduced in 2002, the League Cup was no longer a major trophy as the teams from the top division didn't enter the competition anymore, which elevates it times as the Football League Cup and First Division Cup to a lower level status.

European football[edit]

The team that wins the Premier League title qualifies for the following seasons UEFA Champions League. As the Premier League lies 24th in the current coefficent rankings for the top domestic leagues in europe, only the Scottish league champions enter next seasons Champions League and are currently only gauranteed a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
