Adobe Photoshop is a Graphic design editing programme that was created and released by Adobe Inc. for Microsoft_Windows and MacOS by Thomas_Knoll and John_Knoll on February 19 1990. Whilst originally garnering popularity as a cheaper alternative to having to outsource to other design companies for images for their brands as it allowed them to control and create their own images with a little effort., it has now grown to the point where it can be considered its own art with the outbreak of genres such as [Digital Art] which have become a popular art form in the Modern Era.

Over time Adobe has come up with new ways to upgrade and innovate Photoshop conceiving the idea of the Adobe Family which consists of [Photoshop Elements], [Photoshop Lightroom], [Photoshop Express], [Photoshop Fix], [Photoshop Sketch (Also known as Adobe Illustrator)] and [Photoshop Mix]

Photoshop's Effects on modern media

To this day many aspects of Photoshops influence have spread throughout the world with several Social Apps such as [SnapChat], [Instagram] or [TikTok] which have implemented their own versions of many of Photoshops editing abilities behind "Filters" Which allows people to use already created preset filters that will essentially edit the photo before you take it and allow you to see what it would look like before you take it.

In fact, Photoshop has become such a mainstream behind modern image editing that there are even [Photoshop Contests] that have been held on multiple online websites or forums like the PhotoshopBattles subreddit on[Reddit] where people constantly post photo's they have either taken themselves or photo's they've found elsewhere and then edited them. then other people will reply with their own edited version of the same image below and the amount of Like or Thumbs up will determine the victor

Photoshop is used in such a vast area of occupations that one could even claim that it has become a need-to-know platform. In most schools and education systems, learning editing platforms such as Photoshop has almost become compulsory as it is seen as an essential skill to learn to succeed in the modern world. Film industries use photoshop to edit out any mistakes that may have been made during the filming process. For example, in the [Game of Thrones] Season 8 Episode 4, a stray Starbucks coffee cup was accidentally left during the middle of the filming process leaving a strange out-of-era object in the middle of the table, Something [HBO] (The producers of GoT) considered a large blunder. However, after two days HBO had photoshopped (and potentially other editing programs like [Adobe Premiere Pro]) the offending cup out of the scene and had from then on only released the edited “cupless” version of the episode.

Whilst not the go-to program for most major Film Editing companies there are many major film's that have primarily used Photoshop in order to create their work Some of these works would include;

  • Act of Valor
  • A Liar's Autobiography
  • Avatar (daily and basic edits in conjunction with Avid Media Composer)
  • Captain Abu Raed
  • Deadpool
  • Dust to Glory
  • Gone Girl
  • Hugo (except VFX work)
  • In a Heartbeat
  • Monsters
  • Red Obsession
  • Sharknado 2: The Second One
  • Staten Island Summer
  • Superman Returns (for the video capture process)
  • The Social Network (only conforming)
  • Thunderbirds Are Go
  • Ticket to Ride (by Warren Miller Entertainment)
  • TimeScapes
  • Waiting for Lightning
  • Wayland's Song
  • World War II from Space
  • Nancy
  • Terminator: Dark Fate

Photoshop Tools

Pen Tool The pen tool allows you to create paths that can be manipulated using anchor points. The free form pen tool allows the user to draw paths freehand, and with the magnetic pen tool, the drawn path attaches closely to outlines of objects in an image, which is useful for isolating them from a background.

Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).Clone stamp tool Allows you to reproduce a selected image elsewhere on the edit

Shape tools The shape tool allows you to use a variety of different shapes in your images which you can then alter using the pen tool. this can be done to make new shapes or different kinds of backgrounds.

Measuring and navigation Is split into three different tools, the eyedrop tool which allows you to click on a color and see a sample of it, the hand tool which moves the image in any direction and the Zoom tool which allow you to take a closer look at either the entire image or just a specific part of an image

Selection tools Selection tools are used to pick specific areas of an image to edit without affecting the rest of the picture.

Cropping Cropping is when you select a specific portion of an image you want to keep and cut out the parts that you don't need

Slicing The slicing tool is similar to the crop tool as it allows one to isolate different parts of an image and divide it into sections

Moving The Moving tool is used to move different layers into different positions on the canvas

Marquee The marquee tool allows you to select everything within a rectangular area that you have selected.

Lasso The lasso tool allows you to select specific areas of an image which you can then edit, you can either let the program highlight the image itself or you can freehand lasso it yourself which greatly improves the accuracy of the tool

Magic wand The Magic wand is a selection tool that highlight areas of an image that have similar pixel or color tones

Eraser Allows you to erase different areas of an image or even the entire image if you so wished.

Video editing This allows you to add text or simple image's to videos using the adobe cs5 extended edition.

3D extrusion Allows you to transform a 2D image into a 3D image at the simple click of a button

Mobile integration Photoshop has been integrated into many mobile platforms such as the Ipad allowing people to draw straight from their hands in order to edit their images (Something which many people find incredibly difficult to do with a mouse.)

Camera raw The Camera raw plugin allows you to edit raw images without the need for adobe lightroom

3D Printing Tools This allows you to edit and create designs for 3D printing

Color replacement tool Allows you to change the colors in the highlighted areas without affecting the original image

Cultural impact

Photoshop has become so synonymous with Editing Images that it has become common for people to refer to editing an image with any editing software as being photoshopped. It has also led to the continuous need to question the credibility of any image as some people who are extremely talented and experienced with Photoshop can edit photos to incredibly realistic levels. many people in recent times have been duped by these hyper-realistic edited photos that it has contributed to the rise of the term "Fake new" a good example being when Hilary Clinton tripped climbing the stairs during one of her campaigns on February 27, 2016, however, the image was slightly edited and used by alt-right news network Breitbart [1] of her failing health.

Funnily enough, Photoshopping images has been around long before photoshop was even invented with Joseph Stalin being notoriously well known for his doctoring of images to edit out people who had fallen out of his favor [2]. Doctoring image has long been used as a tactic of nations militaries for several reasons. Some nations such as North Korea would doctor images to make them look stronger than they are, like with their Nuclear Missile launches in 2015 [3]. Others like Hitler during WW2 would greatly falsify reports and images towards the end of the war to make it seem like the Nazi's were winning the war.

Other Editing Softwares Photoshop is often used in partnership with other editing software, most commonly with other members of the "Adobe Family" which was mentioned earlier such as adobe premiere Pro or Adobe Illustrator. whilst they each specify in different areas of editing there are several areas of the platforms that can cross over into one another needs you to alternate between them (Depending on the scale of your work) for example if you wanted to create a logo it is possible to create one in photoshop, however, it is much more convenient to create the logo in illustrator as it is made to specialize in that area. Then you can export the logo over to photoshop and add it to the greater image that you have been working on. The same works for Premiere pro which is focused on Video editing. if there is a mistake in a scene instead of refilming it, depending on its size it would probably be easier to simply export the still shots over to photoshop and edit the mistakes out, then export it from photoshop and add the new cleaned version into your video.
