Overview
[edit]As of February 2016[update], League of Legends features 129 playable characters, known as champions.[1] The game first launched with 40 characters in 2009.[2]
League, like other games in its genre,[3] is known for its steep learning curve and jargon-laden terminology,[4][5][6] which extends to the multiple League character types and traits:
- Carry characters have high offense and low defense ratings, and are thus are most effective against other characters as the game matures. They "carry" the team to victory. The role is also known as "attack defense carry" (ADC or AD carry) and "marksmen".[7][3] A character who deals high damage but dies easily is known as a "glass cannon".[7]
- Support characters protect the carry characters and supply the team with passive protections and perks.[7]
- Jungler characters patrol the "jungle" area in-between the game map's "lane" passages. They collect the less accessible perks in the jungle and surprise the enemy team.[7]
Towards the end of 2014, Riot announced plans to rebuild the game's backstory, known as lore. The company hired a former Warhammer novelist in June 2015 after months of discussions.[8]
Players began to complain of excessive character features in mid-2015, in which new characters such as Ekko were too versatile when a player combined his strengths. Kotaku confirmed this increase in complexity and wrote that the game's popularity and expansive character roster exhausted Riot's capacity to invent unique characters.[2]
Riot discontinued its first character, Gangplank, in July 2015.[9]
Character list
[edit]Character | Introduced | Type | Details |
---|---|---|---|
Ekko | 2015 | Special attacks are time travel-themed. His most notable attack returns him to his original position after several seconds of invulnerability.[10] Ekko was well-liked upon his release, though players found the character too strong as an opponent.[2] | |

Jhin | 2016 | Sniper[1] | |

Upcoming characters
[edit]Riot unveiled a new character design, Ao Shin, during the 2013 League World Championship Chinese qualifiers. The game's first dragon character was heavily anticipated by series fans. Riot quietly discontinued development on the character due to conceptual issues with lore and ability balance, but unveiled another dragon, tentatively titled Aurelion Sol, via its message boards in February 2016.[1]
Shyvana [1][2] Draven [3][4][5][6][7] Syndra [8][9][10][11][12][13]
