By 21 December, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) highlighted the chances of a tropical low forming either on the Arafura Sea, or the Timor Sea.[1] Two days later, this became materialized as a circulation formed over the former's northern portion, with the BoM highlighting the storm's possible designation as 08U if the disturbance fully formed.[2] By the afternoon of 24 December, the BoM noted that 08U fully formed over that area, first situated about 300 kilometres (190 mi) to Darwin's north-northeast.[3]
Preparations and impact[edit]
Upon the BoM's first warning on the system, a cyclone watch were issued by the agency from Point Stuart, Northern Territory, over the Western Australia-Northern Territory Border, until Kalumburu including the Tiwi Islands and the city of Darwin. The BoM also forecasted heavy rainfall for much of the northern portion of Northern Territory including the Top End, and over the coastal areas of Kalumburu's east. Wind gusts of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) were also foreseen to impact the Tiwi Islands and further east.[4] Along with the system and another developing monsoon trough, over 100 millimetres (3.9 in) were foreseen over Darwin.[5] Flood alerts were also placed over residential areas near rivers and reservoirs.[6]
