Bibliography
[edit]- Lysenstøen, C., Bøe, T., Hjetland, G. J., & Skogen, J. C. (2021). A review of the relationship between social media use and online prosocial behavior among adolescents. Frontiers in Psychology, 12, 579347.[1]
- this is a systematic review of social media use. I will use it update the social media pargraph
- Erreygers, S., Vandebosch, H., Vranjes, I., Baillien, E., & De Witte, H. (2018). Development of a measure of adolescents’ online prosocial behavior. Journal of Children and Media, 12(4), 448-464.[2]
- This is a research article that develops and tests a scale to create an objective measure of adolescent's online prosocial behavior (OPB). Lysenstøen et al. use Erreyger's definition as the accepted definition of OPB for their systematic review. I will quote this definition in the social media section of this Wikipedia article.

Outline of proposed changes
[edit]I will update the paragraph on social media with more verifiable sources and to remove unsourced material. I will edit the language to create a more encyclopedic tone.
Specifically:
- Refocus the paragraph to be about prosocial behavior more broadly
- Change the section title from "Social media in natural disasters" to "Social media effects on prosocial behavior"
- Keep the example of the Japanese earthquake as one example of online prosocial behavior
- Remove non-neutral wording and unsourced material
- Replace this sentence: Social media is one of the most newly profound ways to spread awareness with a sentence (and dcitation!) stating the growing use of social media.
- Remove the following sentences:
- Not only is this communication channel a quick way to show recognition worldwide, but it also allows platforms to educate, warn and support all areas of the world falling victim to natural disasters. [1] Social media demonstrates prosocial behavior due to its dexterity to transmit data at any moment and caution to all it comes in contact with. An example of this could include donating money to an important cause or provoking a movement like the Black Lives Matter protests. Spreading awareness and getting more attention on the topic can motivate others and positively shift people's focus and perspective towards the issue. Social Media has a significant influence on society, specifically on the younger generation. This can be used in a beneficial way;
- Reasons:
- The citation for the first sentence here is not a verifiable source (it links directly the red cross page, and is unclear what part of that page refers to social media).
- Much of the rest of these sentences are original research.
- Add a definition of online prosocial behavior
- State (and cite) that most research on social media has been on its negative effects, but that there is some research on prosocial effects (with citations)

Now that you have compiled a bibliography, it's time to plan out how you'll improve your assigned article.
In this section, write up a concise outline of how the sources you've identified will add relevant information to your chosen article. Be sure to discuss what content gap your additions tackle and how these additions will improve the article's quality. Consider other changes you'll make to the article, including possible deletions of irrelevant, outdated, or incorrect information, restructuring of the article to improve its readability or any other change you plan on making. This is your chance to really think about how your proposed additions will improve your chosen article and to vet your sources even further. Note: This is not a draft. This is an outline/plan where you can think about how the sources you've identified will fill in a content gap. |
