This template is called to set up the table giving the makuuchi record for an individual sumotori. It must be matched with a call to {{Sumo record box end}} at the end of the table data.

When called with no parameters or just the shikona parameter, the table defaults to one column for the year and one column for each of the six honbasho held in the modern era.

Between these two template calls should be one {{Sumo record year start}}— {{Sumo record year end}} pair for each year the sumotori was in makuuchi. Between each of those should be six calls to {{Basho}}. To ensure the table looks right always include six, even for honbasho that have not yet been fought, or that occurred that year prior to makuuchi promotion.

Parameters (all optional)

• shikona — The rikishi's fighting name, which will be added as a caption to the table.
• columns — The number of columns to allow for honbasho in each year. This will be the maximum number of honbasho listed even if more are specified in the other parameters. (default: 6)
• month1 — Name of the month for the first honbasho (default:January)
• nick1 — alternate name for the first honbasho (default: Hatsu)
• place1 — Location of the first honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Ryōgoku Kokugikan|Tokyo]])
• month2 — Name of the month for the second honbasho (default:March)
• nick2 — alternate name for the second honbasho (default: Haru)
• place2 — Location of the second honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium|Osaka]])
• month3 — Name of the month for the third honbasho (default:May)
• nick3 — alternate name for the third honbasho (default: Natsu)
• place3 — Location of the third honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Ryōgoku Kokugikan|Tokyo]])
• month4 — Name of the month for the fourth honbasho (default:July)
• nick4 — alternate name for the fourth honbasho (default: Nagoya)
• place4 — Location of the fourth honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium|Nagoya]])
• month5 — Name of the month for the first honbasho (default:September)
• nick5 — alternate name for the first honbasho (default: Aki)
• place5 — Location of the first honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Ryōgoku Kokugikan|Tokyo]])
• month6 — Name of the month for the first honbasho (default:November)
• nick6 — alternate name for the first honbasho (default: Kyūshū)
• place6 — Location of the first honbasho. Can be wikified. (default: [[Fukuoka Convention Center#Fukuoka Kokusai Center|Fukuoka]])
