Siteviews analysis
Take this analysis with a grain of salt. Or maybe a pound. Regardless of your personal sodium preferences, this is more fun than serious, although of course all the data is actually real. Totally. Source[unreliable source?].
The good
[edit]- English Wikipedia is the most-viewed English project (in total pageviews) by far. We're talking almost 250 million pageviews per day. For some as yet unexplained reason, views spiked dramatically in spring 2020 – surpassing 300 million – before descending to a low in early to mid 2021 – plummeting as far down as 212 million. 212,000,000 pageviews! How did we manage?
- Wikipedia receives pageviews from roughly 70 M unique devices, up from 2015's 60 M.
- Wikimedia Commons is the second-most viewed project overall – although, in recent years, Wiktionary has been gaining. Commons' views descended sharply in spring 2020, falling from 6 M to 4 M, then sliding further to 2.8 M in the dark days of August, 2020. Since then, Commons has regained some of its former splendour, and, except for one spike of 7 M on the 13th of July, 2021, has held steady around 4 M views. Commons maintains a unique devices statistic of between 1 and 1.5 million.
- English Wiktionary is the second-most viewed English project, and is looking to oust Commons for second place. Eight years ago, it had a steady 1.5 M views per day (on average). Today, it is pushing 3 M, while Commons fell from 10 M (2015) to 4.5 M (2023). Again, rough averages, but if this trend continues, the results could be earth-shaking.[understatement] On the unique devices front, Wiktionary's growth is even more striking. From 2021's low of less than 500,000 unique devices, that statistic has risen to just shy of one million.
The less good
[edit]- Wikidata – from its humble 2015 days with only 300 K pageviews per day, the free data repository has soared to roughly 1.3 M in 2023. The catch? The project's unique devices count remains low. It hangs around 100 K unique devices, from 2015's 23 K UDs. Its reader base grows steadily but slowly.
